Passage 1.(2020·广州市第四中学)

“You could win prizes” our teacher told us as she wrote the poster information on the blackboard. She passed out sheets of construction paper while continuing, “The first prize is ten dollars. You just have to make sure that the words on the blackboard appear somewhere on your poster.”

We studied the board critically. Some of us looked with one eye and held up certain colors against the blackboard, rocking the sheets to the right or left while we conjured up our designs. Others twisted their hair around their fingers or chewed their erasers while deep in thought. For me, it was totally a task rather than a competition or it was a common trick that adult play

Passage 2.(2020·淮安市淮安区教师发展中心学科研训处高二期中)

Ann loves dogs, but she doesn’t have time to keep even one. Her husband died from an accident, leaving little money but a 10-year-old son, Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation. She had to work all day to support the whole family. One morning, Ann found a lost dog wandering around the local school. She waited there for half an hour but nobody came back to look for it. She had no choice but to take it home and asked her sons to keep an eye on the dog on the day while she was working.

Ann took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers as soon as she came back from work. After a quick supper , Ann, with Jack went out and put them in mailboxes. The next day, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, asking the boy to look after it for another day, and she hoped it would be the last day. She didn’t forget to warn her son not to fall in love with the dog, for they had no money or time.

Four days later no one called to claim, so Ann’s family was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. One day when she arrived home from work, the dog barked madly at her and dashed into the boy’s room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack.

“If you had come to me ten minutes later,” the doctor said, “Jack would have not been saved.”

Still no one had called to claim the dog, and it had been the best friend of her son. Ann decided to keep it, although she knew it would bring so much difficulty.

Passage 3.(2020·随州市第一中学高二期中)

My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as always did. My father was a lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.

As expected, he cleared his throat and started to say, "Er...What ... What do you really want to do in the gorgeous future ? "

I was silent for a moment playing with the cellphone. I kept thinking,"Should I tell him my true thoughts? What if he gets angry? What if I let him down?" Later I replied, "Well, I want to be a writer."

I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But answered surprisingly,"Interesting idea!"I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation(犹豫).

"Are you serious,Dad?"

"Well, you need confidence and good preparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it''s late. Let''s take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs for dinner, and we can talk more."

Early next morning we packed up the equipment and set off along the coast. We didn''t talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.

There were no big waves and bright sunlight at that time. " Let''s see if we are lucky , " he said , and picked up a cage with a rope tied to it and threw it into the sea . We waited a while , then my father stood up and said , " Give me a hand with this . " Then we pulled up the crab cage onto the deck(甲板).

To our joy , the cage was filled with dozens of soft shell crabs .Squatting(蹲) down, we watched them for a moment. At first they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape(逃跑). Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up,but there were still some crabs trying to escape again and again.

Passage 4.(2020·河北深州市中学高二期中)

My husband and I were excited about buying our first house. But our money was limited, and none of the houses in our price range seemed satisfactory.

One agent suggested a house in particular. Although her description sounded wonderful, the price was beyond our budget, so we turned down the offer. But she kept persuading us to have a look.

We finally did and it was love at first sight. It was our home, small and charming, overlooking a quiet lake. Walking through the rooms and talking with the owners, a nice elderly couple, we felt the warmth and happiness of the marriage within that home. Perfect as it was, the price remained too high for us. But every day, we would sit by the lake, looking at the house and dreaming of what it would be like to live in it. Days later, we made an offer—— far below the asking price. Surprisingly, they didn''t laugh at us. They renewed their offer instead. It was also much more than we could afford, but far less than the original asking price.

The next day, we got a disappointing message that another buyer had offered a much higher price. Even so, we decided to talk with the owners directly. We made our final offer, which still was thousands of dollars less than the other buyer''s bid(出价). We knew it, but we had to try. Nobody knew if we could get it.

Passage 5.(2020·山东潍坊·高二期中)

When she was twelve years old, Raha earned a scholarship to study at a boarding school in England. Her father told her to study hard and practice running every day in England. She nodded because that is much easier than staying happy in a completely new country. Several days later, she kissed her family and boarded the plane for England. As the plane took off, she looked out of the window at the goats and brown rivers of Kenya. She stared down at the green fields where she used to run like the wind, barefoot (赤脚的).

At school in England, Raha had lots of math problems to solve, essays to write, and books to read. She also joined in the school running team. They were preparing for an important running race, in which runners from different schools took part. In order to practice running, her coach gave her a striped shirt, white shorts, shoes with cleats (防滑钉) and another pair with spongy soles (吸水鞋底) for cross-country. Honestly speaking, she had always run barefoot at home, so the shoes felt tight (紧的). But all the other runners wore shoes and Raha didn’t want to be different.

The team practiced every weekday afternoon. On Saturdays, everyone watched football —— everyone but Raha. She would run alone on the country roads barefoot and run over fields thick with mud just as in her hometown. Each day at lunch, she would sit alone in the large dining hall, eating dishes totally strange to her and missing her family.

One Saturday, Raha ran up a hill and found herself in a barnyard (谷仓前的空场地). To her surprise, one of her classmates, Thomas, stood just inside the bam doors. After he greeted her, Raha asked, “Why aren’t you watching football “I have to help my father,” said Thomas, “but why aren’t you wearing your shoes?”

Passage 6.(2020·湖北高二期中)

After 21 years of marriage, I discovered a new way of keeping alive the spark of love. I started to go out with another woman. It was really my wife’s idea.

“I know that you love her.” she said one day, taking me by surprise. “But I love YOU,” I protested. “I know, but you also love her.”

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.

“What’s wrong? Are you well?” she asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.

“I thought that it would be pleasant to pass some time with you,” I responded. “Just the two of us.” She thought about it for a moment, then said, “I would like that very much.”

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as beautiful as an angel’s.

“I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed,” she said, as she got into the car. “They can’t wait to hear about our meeting.”

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me with a smile on her lips.

Passage 7.(2020·湖南长沙一中高二期中)

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer''s showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told his father what he wanted was the sports car. As Graduation Day approached, the young man waited for signs that his father had purchased the car.

Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box.

Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man''s name carved in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. He felt depressed and couldn''t accept the fact why his father did not fulfill his expectation.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that Graduation Day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a message from one of his relatives telling him his father had passed away, and left all of his possessions to his son. Mary looked at the store window longingly. There was nothing that she wanted more than a Happy Hannah doll. It was 29.9. Unluckily, Mary didn''t even have the 95 cents, so she let out a deep sigh and continued walking home.

As she crossed the street, she thought about doing her brother''s housework, cleaning the floor and washing the dishes all months to earn money, but even then she would have only eleven dollars. Suddenly, something small and pink in the snow caught her eyes. Mary walked over and picked it up from the snow. It was a beautiful wallet. She opened the wallet and found a thick pile of folded green bills and a woman''s driver''s license. Mary put the wallet into her bag quickly. She turned around and walked back.

Mary''s heart beat fast as she entered the store. She had long dreamed about this moment, but something didn''t feel right. As she got to the Happy Hannah dolls, she pushed away her feelings. She grabbed one and walked toward the checkout.

As Mary was waiting to pay, her mobile phone rang. Mary looked around, startled (吓了一跳). It was her grandma. Mary''s heart was suddenly filled with love and warmth when she thought of her. She put the doll down and answered the phone.

"Hi, Grandma! I''m going to be a little bit late tonight…. Alright…I love you, too." Mary left the store and walked all the way to 301West Street.

I met DeDe during my second year in high school. She was in a class that helps students with a variety of mental and physical disabilities. I had never communicated with them until my, field hockey(曲棍球)coach who was also their teacher, asked me to help her to meet DeDe when her bus dropped her off for the basketball game.

On that January evening, I saw an electric wheelchair with DeDe in it. The first feature I noticed about DeDe was her smile, which was as vibrant (有活力的) as the sun on a summer day, “I came to pick you up for your first basketball game,” I said. “I’m really excited about that,” she replied enthusiastically.

I had never worked with special needs students and didn’t know what to expect, but DeDe could cam, on a full conversation, and I could understand 90% of her words. She blew me away with her intelligence and confidence. Soon we became close friends.

One day as I drove to DeDe’s house, I thought about my life. I couldn’t think of any great achievements, yet I had the ability to succeed. DeDe couldn’t go through a normal day of high school, and she didn’t have a regular social life. But she was always joyful and devoted herself to her interest. At that time, I was deeply in love with field hockey, but my mother didn’t allow me to play it in the third year. I didn’t know what to do.

Pulling up to her house, I saw DeDe’s grandmother. She called me inside to talk. “DeDe really thinks a lot of you and I feel so blessed that you have come into her life. It’s not a complete day if DeDe doesn’t mention you.” I felt so touched. I had never known how much I meant to DeDe before.

Passage 10.(2020·长沙市·湖南师大附中)

Sophia frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.

“Moving here was a dumb idea," Sophia grumbled, mostly to herself. The girl had been joyless about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.

The first few days at her new school hadn''t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn''t know, and it seemed like the students hadn''t even noticed her. Sophia sighed and got back to washing dishes.

On the day of the grand opening,Sophia'' s parents were all smiling, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Sophia was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.

At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Sophia'' s age. As she filled their glasses,Sophia realized the twins were in her class,Emily and Jenny. Sophia ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.

Sophia'' s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.

“Honey, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers. ”

“Mom, I don''t want to be out there. There are kids from school!”

“So?” her mother asked.“That''s good! Go take them some fortune cookies and say hello!”She clucked her tongue disapprovingly at Sophia and disappeared out of the kitchen.

Sophia frowned. She grabbed a handful of fortune cookies that they gave out after every meal, but first she tore open a wrapper and cracked a cookie open for herself. She popped a sweet, crunchy piece in her mouth, and absently read the fortune paper it held.

“Many friends are found with a single smile,” it read.

Passage 11.(2020·南京大学附属中学高二期中)

In my profession as an educator and health care provider, I have worked with a large number of children infected with the virus that causes AIDS. The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life. They have taught me so many things, but I have especially learned that great courage can be found in the smallest of packages. Let me tell you about one of the kids — Tyler.

Tyler was born infected with HIV: his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medical aids to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back. Medications were hooked up to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his breathing.

Tyler wasn’t willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicine-laden backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little wagon. All of us who knew Tyler marveled at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him. Tyler’s mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast that she needed to dress him in red. That way, when she looked out of the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly find him.

Passage 12.(2020·福建省武平县第一中学高二期中)

One windy day in March, Kitty Miller was on her way to school, when she spotted a great pile of lovely red apples in a store window. "Oh, how lovely!” she said. If only Mamma could have one!"

Kitty''s mother was very poor. She had been a dressmaker ever since Mr. Miller died, and had worked so hard to earn a living for herself and Kitty that she had become sick. She had to lie in bed all day, and when Kitty was away at school, the house was very lonesome to her.

When Kitty reached the school that day, her thoughts were full of her sick mother and the lovely apples. She was usually a good student, but today she made so many mistakes that the teacher looked at her in surprise. The little girl could only sit at her desk, with her book before her, and dream of those red apples. When school was dismissed, Kitty started slowly homeward. She had gone only a short distance when she saw a gentleman in front of her drop his wallet. Running quickly forward, she picked it up. It felt quite heavy in Kitty''s little hand.

There must be a good deal of money in it, thought Kitty. "How I wish I could keep it. Then I could buy Mamma a red apple and so many other things she needs." But she knew this would not be right, so she hurried after the gentleman. Touching him on the arm, she said, "Please, Sir. You dropped your wallet." "Thank you, dear," said the gentleman, taking the wallet. Then noticing how poorly dressed she was, he said, “Why did you not keep the wallet, my child?”

"Because that would be stealing,,, replied Kitty. “But,” she continued honestly, "before I thought I must give it back to you, I did wish I could keep it, for then I could buy Mamma a red apple. "

Passage 13.(2020·湖北武汉·高二期中)

A light rain was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the shop, eager to get home and play with the presents that our parents had prepared for us and our baby sister, Sharon.Across the street from the shop was a gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped, which was closed for New Year, but I saw a family standing outside the locked door, gathering closely together under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry.I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.

Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents’ house for our annual family dinner. As we drove down the highway through town,I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station.

My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff(岔道) for my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went.Suddenly,my father made a U-turn in the middle of the road and said that he couldn’t stand it.“What?” asked my mother.“It’s those people back there at the station, standing in the rain. They’ve got children. It’s New Year.I can’t stand it.”

When my father pulled into the service station,I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children—two girls and a small boy,who were getting wet standing there. My father rolled down his window.“Happy New Year,” he said.

“Thanks. You, too,” the man replied. He was very tall and had to bend slightly to look into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I looked at the children, and they looked back at us.

“You waiting on the bus?” my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and chances of a job. Knowing the bus wouldn’t come along for several hours, my father invited them to our home to shelter from the rain.

Passage 14.(2020·湖北鄂州·高二期中)

Whether we notice it or not, our child is a little reflection of ourselves. They grow up looking more and more like us. They even have similar personalities and hobbies. And in some cases, the standard of choosing a good friend.

One day, my 10-year-old Jane said, “Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?” Her words made me extremely happy because Jane was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.

“Sure, honey, that sounds great.” I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend, Susan. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter. I was shy and had trouble making friends. But Susan drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. Thanks to Susan. I was happy every day.

In senior high school, Susan went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. “I’ll be back soon and I will write to you as soon as I arrive.” she told me. But I didn’t get her phone call nor receive any mail from her. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey, making my hope of seeing Susan impossible.

Whenever I thought of him, tears came into my eyes.

The next day Jane brought her new friend home. “Hi, Mrs. Smith.” the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she gave me a big smile. “My name is Jo. My mom will pick me up 2 hours later.”

Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the empty dressing room. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback .“If I can win today,” she said to herself, “I can dance on the national stage next month.” Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment , she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.

“Hi, Mary,” in rushed her friend Jessica. “How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?”

“I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match . ” said Mary with a determined look.

“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched competitor. Come on!”

After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin . “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.

A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I’m Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain . “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out.
