When we arrived in Guatemala two weeks ago, we didn’t know what to expect. But I have to say, we had a great time. I did a lot of traveling, and I think it’s one of the most amazing places. We did a lot in the last two weeks. We went hiking and saw some of the ancient places. We also saw some beautiful birds. There were lots of things we didn’t have time to do. I always want to go to the rainforest. I hope we can get there one day.

Camping was really fun. We drove to Ipala Volcano. It was worth the trip, though. There’s a really pretty lake that we hiked around. It rained really hard one night, and everything outside the tent got wet, but at least the tent was fine. Luckily, the weather got better. Another place we found had a hot waterfall (瀑布). Standing under it was just like taking a hot shower!

(2023·浙江杭州·校联考一模)If you go shopping in any toy store, you can see clearly the different games and toys for boys and girls: there are a lot of pink toys on one side of the store for girls; and dark-colored cars, guns, and soldiers for boys. Some big stores with toys may even have a pink floor for girls and a blue floor for boys. In fact, it is difficult to buy a toy for a girl that is not pink.

Some people think that too much pink is bad for girls. Sue Palmer, writer of Toxic Childhood, is very worried that most girls over the age of three are crazy about the color. According to some scientists, this happens for two reasons. Firstly, most companies offer too many products in pink. Also, many parents think their little daughter looks cute in pink. Sue Palmer says that girls at this age cannot make proper decisions by themselves, but the pink can affect (影响) the choices and the decisions they will make in the future.

Some parents are worried too—for example, Vanessa Holburn, thirty-two, who has two girls under the age of four. Their bedrooms are a sea of pink and Vanessa is not happy. “Pink says that you are soft and gentle. Blue says that you are strong and powerful. I want my daughters to be strong and powerful. I’m worried that pink will not help them with that,” she says.

But not everyone thinks there’s something wrong with pink. Grayson Turner is a father of three girls and he isn’t worried at all. “People forget that things change all the time,” he says. “My girls used to love pink when they were little, but as they get older, they change.” Turner explains that his twelve-year-old daughter never wears pink clothes anymore. “This love of pink is just a fashion and all fashions change,” he adds. “It’s only since the 1940s that people have started dressing girls in pink—before that it was a color for boys.”

(2023·浙江杭州·校联考一模)There is a glass on the table, filled up halfway with water. How would you describe the glass: half empty or half full? If your answer was “half full”, then prepare yourself for an exciting life in which anything is possible. If you said “half empty” on the other hand, you might just fail to do something or be worried about your life. It may sound crazy, but that’s the power of positive (积极的) thinking!

Experts believe that positive thinking has several important benefits (好处). First, it can make us feel happy about our life. If someone focuses on all of the good things that they have, he is much less likely to feel bad about his life. Compare that to someone who’s always talking about the bad side of any situation, the positive thinker will be the happier of the two.

Positive thinking can also improve our health. One study showed that it takes shorter to recover (恢复) from diseases for people with positive thinking while it takes longer for those who are always in depressing feeling. Also, people who are highly stressed are easier to catch a cold and the flu.

Another benefit is that positive thinking can influence the world around us. In the 2006 book The Secret, author Rhonda Byrne describes a “law of attraction”. This law is according to the idea that positive thinking attracts positive things. If you think about a new sports car, you might just get one.

Positive thinking may improve our minds, bodies, and even the world, but how do we get started? According to Richard Wiseman, an expert of psychology (心理学), the best way to change how we think is to change our behavior. He believes that if someone practices smiling every day, he or she will think happier thoughts.

12.What does it mean if you describe a half glass of water “half full”?

A.You may fail to do something. B.Your life may sound crazy.

My best dadBy Andrew

Dad gets a little nervous when he talks in front of a group of people. He doesn’t like to socialize with other people. And he is short and shy. But in my eyes, he is the best dad a kid could dream of.

It was a long night, raining. I was alone in my room and bored out of my mind. Just when I was about to play a new computer game, I heard a quick heavy knock on my bedroom door. It was Dad.

“Come on, Andrew,” he said to me. “You can play the game later. Now you have to see something. “Then we were in the car. I had no idea what was going on, but I was a little curious (好奇) because I knew we were onto something interesting. Or, Dad would never make me out of my room and take me for a car ride on a dark rainy night.

The next thing I knew was that we were on an empty street, staring at some silly, childish toys in a tiny store.

“What are we doing here, Dad?” I asked. “Why are we staring at these toys?”

“How can you not remember?” Dad looked at me in excitement. “You cried for one of these on your fifth birthday—you wouldn’t talk to me for two whole days because I couldn’t get you one,” he continued. “And guess what? I found them! Finally! Quick, tell me, which one do you like?”

I was surprised and then cried. I was fourteen then.

I hugged Dad. That night made him the best dad in the world and me the luckiest child. 16.What is Andrew’s dad like?

The process of making a movie began long before the cameras started rolling. Anyone who works in film can tell you that a lot of work goes on behind the scenes. It leaves many movie fans wondering: How are movies made?

All movies start as just an idea. Many writers, actors, and directors carry notebooks to write down ideas that come to them during the day. The best ideas grow in their minds until they’re big enough to become a film.

Once an idea has had some time to grow, the next step is to write a script(剧本). It breaks up the story into scenes and lays out the action and dialogue for the characters in the story. It is written long before filming starts and guides everyone who works on the movie.

In most cases, the next step is to make a storyboard(剧情梗概图). It helps writers and directors decide what the movie will look like. Many people draw storyboards by hand.

Is it time to film yet? Not quite! It takes many people to make a movie. Before filming, movie makers must find the right people to make a movie. And for big movies, they might need hundreds or even thousands of people.

After everything is in place, it’s time to get the cameras rolling. Everyone taken part in the film travels to the chosen location. There, they shoot each scene until they get it just right.

After filming, the job continues. Editors put different footage(连续镜头) together and then add music and anything else needed to complete the film. When they’re done, the movie is finally ready for the big screen.

All in all, shooting a film often takes between six and eight months. Film making is a long and difficult process, but it is also full of fun. Do you want to have a try?

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)A blog by Frank, aged 15

I didn’t like attention drawn to myself in class. Unless assigned (指定) a seat by the teacher, I always chose to sit at the back of the classroom.

All these changed after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I join a Ping-Pong team. At first I refused because I couldn’t even play Ping-Pong. But the teacher kept encouraging me “going for it”, so I decided to give a try.

Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts (选拔赛) was only the half of it. Luckily, I passed them. Before attending the practice sessions (练习赛), all the players need to know the rules of the game. I was the only one “new” at the game, so I decided to do my best at each training. Soon I knew the rules and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and encouraging. With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the process. I never had so much fun and was so confident!

Now I have more self-confidence in myself. Every time I meet problems, my teacher’s “going for it” rings in my ears.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)When did the first man appear? Although early humans didn’t leave any written records, they left many paintings on the walls of the caves (洞穴) where they lived. From these paintings, we know that early humans walked on four limbs. Also, they did not live at one place but moved from place to place in search of food and water.

Without any tools, early humans used stones and wood to dig and cut their food. They also used these to protect themselves from animals. Because stones were used to make tools, this age was called Stone Age.

With time going, tools made of stones and wood were replaced (代替) with metal ones. Metals(金属) were also used for farming and making knives.

The first fire that early humans noticed was natural fire caused by lightning. With fire, early humans could now light up dark caves. They could keep themselves warm during cold weather and cook meat. Also the fire could drive animals away.

Early humans noticed new trees growing from the seeds (种子) that fell to the ground from the fruits. This gave them the idea that they could make their own food by planting seeds, which led to farming. With the beginning of farming, early humans began to live in one place. They moved out of the caves and lived on farms and near the fields together, then the first villages appeared.

Raising animals changed the life of early humans. The wild dogs were probably the first animal to be raised. As time went, goats, sheep, cows, and horses were kept, too. This led to herding (畜牧业).

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Sea turtles (海龟) live in the sea most of the time. The beaches in Florida are home to sea turtles. Female sea turtles come here from the ocean to lay eggs. Then they return to the ocean. However, the number of some of these turtle species is falling. They are in danger. So people in Florida work together as a community to protect them.

Some volunteers take direct action to help the turtles. They look closely at the sand to find out where the sea turtles lay their eggs. Then they help bury (埋藏) the eggs in order to save them from being destroyed. They also help people who are studying sea turtles.

Florida’s government has passed laws to save the turtles. One of these laws is “Florida’s Marine Turtle Protection Act”. This law prevents anyone from destroying sea turtles nests or eggs. It helps protect the turtles from dying out.

People also work together to save the turtles through organizations (组织) like the Sea Turtle Conservancy. For example, the bright light from buildings near the beach can influence sea turtles. The baby turtles may get lost. Many of them do not make it to the ocean and die. The Sea Turtle Conservancy works with house owners to make the lighting in their buildings sea turtle-friendly. They also advise people to turn off their lights at night if they live close to a beach.

In a word, everyone can do their part to protect sea turtles and their living places. People in Florida can work as volunteers to clean up the beaches and pick up their own litter. Everyone in the community has the power to make a difference!

38.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Should I repair it or replace (更换) it when a much-used home appliance (家用电器) suddenly stops working? It is hard to decide.

Almost every family has faced this difficult question. There are so many things to consider, from the cost to the influence on the environment. However, you may not have much time to make a decision just imagine living without a fridge in the summer.

According to a recent survey, more than 94 percent of the 12500 participants (参与者) chose to repair a broken appliance. Only 6 percent chose to replace the appliance. Did they make a wise decision?

I think it is helpful for you to make a decision if you can work out the current (当前的) value of your appliance. When you buy a new home appliance, write down its cost and the number of years you expect it to last. Divide the cost by the number of years and you will know how much value the appliance loses each year. When the appliance breaks down, you can quickly work out its current value. If a repair costs more than the appliance’s current value, you should buy a new one to replace the appliance. Otherwise (否则), you can consider repairing it.

According to this rule, if a washing machine breaks down when it is eight years old, you should replace it. For fridges, that number is nine. And for vacuum cleaners, it is seven. What do you think of this rule? How do you decide whether to repair a broken appliance or to replace it? Have you ever felt sorry about your decision?

42.What may most people do when a much-used home appliance suddenly stops working according to the survey?

A.Have it repaired. B.Buy a new one.

C.Go on living without it. D.Make a decision slowly.

43.What does the underlined phrase “breaks down” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Stops working. B.Costs much. C.Loses value. D.Gets repaired.

44.After how many years should we replace a fridge when it is broken?

A.Six years. B.Seven years. C.Eight years. D.Nine years.

45.Which of the following should be the best title for the passage?

A.Is it a wise decision? B.Felt sorry about your decision?

C.Repair or Replace? D.How to repair home appliances?

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)When the first supermarket opened its doors 75 years ago, shoppers were in shock. That day in January 1948 changed the way people in the UK shopped. On 12 January 1948, a great number of people crowded into a new shop in Manor Park, London. This was because it allowed shoppers to choose, touch and take things off the shelves themselves. The idea came from the US, where a supermarket-style shop called Piggly Wiggly had opened in 1916. Its owner, Clarence Saunders, decided to let people help themselves instead of serving each of them. In this way, he could cut costs and reduce prices. Shopping trolleys (购物车) first appeared in the UK supermarkets in 1950. With a trolley, people could carry more in a single shopping trip.

Within 10 years, supermarkets were springing up all over Britain. People could find one almost anywhere. The first one-stop supermarket opened in Nottingham shire, England, in 1964. It had 50 departments and sold everything under one roof. Around 30, 000 people and 1,000 cars turned up on its opening weekend, causing traffic jams. Today, 9 out of 10 people buy things from supermarkets.

Supermarkets are using technology to make shopping easier. Amazon Fresh shops use cameras and shelves to see and weigh what people buy. In the US, “smart trolleys” scan (扫描) objects when they are dropped in and make it easy for customers to find things. Engineers in Hong Kong have designed self-driving trolleys. Supermarkets are looking for smarter ways to send things, too. Coles supermarket in Australia uses drones(无人机) to fly things to customers’ doors.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Scientists have known for a long time that humans and other apes (类人猿) have many physical similarities. Now, new research has shown that we may also share a language because we use the same physical gestures (手势) to communicate.

Researchers already knew that great apes use more than 80 gestures to communicate with each other. Touching each other, or holding hands is a way of greeting, while pointing their fingers down beside them means “come here”. The apes might also ask for food from each other by cupping (做杯状) a hand under another ape’s face.

To test whether humans can understand these gestures, some scientists from the University of St Andres in Scotland brought 5,656 volunteers together. The scientists showed them 20 videos of apes making gestures. After watching each video, the volunteers had to guess what the ape’s gestures were communicating. The scientists gave some information to one group of volunteers, letting them know what the apes had been doing before they made each gesture. This group correctly guessed the meaning of the gestures 57% of the time. The other people, who were not given information about the ape’s activities, still succeeded 52% of the time. This suggests that humans seem to understand what apes’ gestures mean.

Scientists need to do more work to find out exactly why humans understand the gestures. Researcher Kirsty Graham said that both humans and apes probably inherited (继承) the gestures from our last common ancestor. It is also possible that although humans have a spoken language, we kept our ability to use gestures to communicate. “In future, we hope to learn more about how gestures develop through the apes’ lifetimes,” Dr Graham added.

57.What does an ape probably mean by holding another ape’s hands?

A.Asking for food. B.Asking for help. C.Saying “hello”. D.Saying “goodbye”.

58.How does the writer show the results of the research in Paragraph 3?

A.By raising questions. B.By using numbers.

C.By listing reasons. D.By telling a story.

59.Why do people seem to understand some of the apes’ gestures according to Graham?

A.Because scientists have studied apes for quite a long time.

B.Because humans use gestures to communicate with apes.

C.Because the apes learned the gestures from the scientists.

D.Because humans and apes share a last common ancestor.

60.What will the researchers study in future according to Graham?

A.In what other ways apes can communicate.

B.How gestures change through apes’ lives.

C.How humans communicate with gestures.

D.What similarities humans share with apes.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)ChatGPT was released (发布) late last year by company OpenAI. The technology chats in a conversational way, answering questions from users. The online chatbot (chat robot) has been trained on lots of information from the Internet—it can have a human-like conversation answering questions, admitting (承认) mistakes and refusing to answer improper questions. Experts say it can be used to write articles, stories, poems and even solve computer problems. But there are limits (限制) to what it can do, which OpenAI admits. Sometimes it writes answers which are incorrect or don’t make sense, and it sometimes guesses what the user has asked it instead of asking more follow-up questions to understand the questions better.

ChatGPT is getting mixed opinions from people. Some think students might use it to cheat, while others think they should use the tool in the classroom to help children learn. Some people believe that _______▲_______. In their opinion, just like when Google was created, people were unsure at first, but if teachers introduce the technology and teach students the advantages but also the disadvantages, that can help with their learning. In the USA, the New York City education office didn’t allow ChatGPT to be used at school and its Internet. They did so because of “bad influence on students’ learning, and worries that the answers from ChatGPT are probably not safe or correct”.

ChatGPT’s ability to answer questions caused some users to wonder if it might take Google’s place. Others asked if news reporters’ jobs were at risk. ChatGPT and other AI systems, have also raised a number of social risks, according to Carly Kind of the Ada Lovelace Institute, an independent research center to make sure AI works for people. Among the possible problems of AI, Ms. Kind mainly worries that AI might store the false information forever.

AI has a long way to go, and big ideas yet to discover. We will fall over along the way, and learn a lot from getting in touch with the real world.

64.What do we know about ChatGPT?

A.It gives perfect answers to meet users’ needs.

B.It’s a chatbot that can answer questions from users.

C.It asks follow-up questions to chat better with users.

D.ChatGPT is a perfect invention and brings benefits to the world.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Death is a part of life and it’s natural to grieve when an animal you love dies. Grieving—the feeling reaction to death—is an important part of the healing process (康复过程).

Deal with the loss of a pet

A pet is part of the family, so when they die, it can be very difficult and upset for everyone who loved them. It’s a big change to get used to and it’s natural to miss them. It can help to remember that your pet can no longer feel hungry, cold or pain.

It’s OK to feel sad, angry, shocked or to feel hard to believe they’re no longer alive. There’s no right way to feel or to grieve. As people are all different, the length of time it takes for you to feel less sad may not be the same as for someone else. Dipti Solanki, who helps people with their grief, says, “In my opinion, your feelings matter and are normal after you lose a pet. They can feel really big and difficult to control.” It’s OK if sometimes you smile or laugh and don’t feel so sad. It doesn’t mean you loved your pet any less.

Share to overcome your bad feelings

It’s better to talk than to keep your thoughts and feelings to yourself. Solanki says, “It’s really important that you talk about feeling sad or afraid to your friends, because once you do, you will start to feel calmer and less alone. After you share your feelings, they become less serious and easier to deal with.” Talking about your pet helps to keep it memories alive because you remember the time you spent together.

Celebrate your beloved pet

It can help to remember the funny things your pet did, what you loved about them and the happy time you shared. As well as talking about them, you can get creative. Print out photos of your pet and make them into a collage (拼贴画). You can also draw or paint a picture of them. Or write a story about something you did together or how they made you feel.

68.What does the underlined word “grieve” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A.To feel sorry for losing someone you love.

B.To become lonely for living away from pets.

C.To become tired for taking good care of pets.

D.To feel happy for leaving something unpleasant.

69.Why are Dinti Solanki’s words mentioned in Paragraph 3?

A.To tell an interesting story.

B.To support the writer’s opinion.

C.To give readers more facts.

D.To compare different examples.

70.Which of the following idea might the writer agree with?

A.The length of the healing process is the same.

B.Sharing bad feelings is like cutting them in half.

C.Keeping the feelings to yourself is a proper way.

D.It’s not necessary to feel sad for the death of pets.

71.According to the text, what can we do to feel less sad about the death of a pet?

A.Talk to its photos or collages as if it were still alive.

B.Never talk about it as if it never appeared in our life.

C.Buy a new pet as soon as possible to forget the dead one.

D.Remember it needn’t experience coldness or hunger anymore.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction (上瘾). When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar goes into our blood and influences the parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has an especially strong influence. In this way, it is an addictive drug (药) that doctors advise we all cut down on.

“It seems like every time I study an illness and follow a way to the first cause, I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Tohnson. One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 347 million have diabetes(糖尿病). Why? “Sugar, we believe, is one of the causes, if not the major cause,” says Johnson.

Our bodies are designed to live on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very experienced in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.

So what is the solution? It’s clear that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s pretty difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals (谷物) to after-dinner desserts (甜点), our foods are increasingly filled with it. Some producers even use sugar to replace (代替) taste in foods that are advertised as low in fat. So while the foods appear to be healthier, plenty of sugar are often added.

But some people are fighting back against sugar and trying to create a healthier environment. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier choices, like fruit. Other schools are trying to encourage exercise by building facilities (设施), so students and others in the community can exercise. The war has not yet been lost.

72.Which of the following is an OPINION in the text?

A.Up to 347 million people in the world have diabetes.

B.One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure

C.Sugar influences parts of brain to make people feel good.

A.Storing sugar as fat. B.Having less energy.

C.Having no food to eat. D.Eating too much fat.

74.Why is it so hard to avoid sugar according to the text?

A.People today hardly exercise.

B.We get used to eating it at school.

C.It’s in so many foods and drinks.

D.Some producers sell too much sugar.

75.What is the purpose of the text?

A.To remind readers to take less sugar.

B.To advise scientists to fight against sugar.

C.To tell readers the illnesses caused by sugar.

D.To teach readers different ways to store sugar.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Homeschooling

What do most people remember about their school days? Playing with classmates during breaks, eating food in the dining hall, or going to the headmaster’s office, perhaps. But 850,000 teenagers in the United States don’t experience these things, because they are homeschooled. They don’t go to a regular school.

Their parents teach them. Their education takes place at home and in the community. What is it like to be homeschooled? Read Dylan’s blog about his homeschooling experience.

MONDAY, July 10

I’m Dylan and I’m 14 years old. This is my third year of being homeschooled by my mom, a university professor (教授). A lot of people ask me how I feel about it. They ask, “Do you miss being in school with other kids?”

We can go fast or slow, depending on the subject. These days, I’m reading books that most kids only read when they get to college. I’m studying French, German, art, and the histories of the world—things I’m very interested in.

A lot of kids think I never get to communicate with other kids, but that’s not true. I get together with the other homeschooled kids during our weekly sports games and at social events. (2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Last year, I started doing some volunteer work for a charity (慈善机构) in my town that helps disabled children. I found out that the charity needed to buy some new wheelchairs, but that they really didn’t have the money. So, I started to think about what I could do to raise money.

When I mentioned this to my friends, they said, “Well, why don’t you run the London Marathon?!” They laughed and so did I—we all know that I’ve never done any running before. But later, I started to think that it might not be a bad idea.

I talked to the charity people and they agreed to put my name forward. I bought some gear (装备) and started running. After a month or so, I found I could do almost five kilometers. The problem, though, was that the marathon is 42 kilometers. The race was only five months away. I practiced as hard as I could—I had to run and finish the race, because if I did, I would raise enough money to buy four new wheelchairs.

Well, when the big day came, I was not at all sure that I was ready. During my training, I’d managed to run 25 kilometers, but 42? Could I do it?

Luckily, it wasn’t a hot day and the people running with me helped me a lot. However, after about 34 kilometers, I was really tired and I nearly stopped, but the people watching cheered me on and I managed to struggle (挣扎) on to the finish line. My time was five hours and ten minutes.

It was hard, but I finally did the marathon and got the wheelchairs for the charity.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Should you see a doctor every time you’re sick? Of course not! Doctors don’t have a cure (疗法) for everything. In fact, there are many simple illnesses that are difficult for doctors to cure. Sometimes people use different “home remedies (治疗法)” for them.

The cold virus (病毒) is one example. People in many countries don’t take medicine for a cold. They make a big pot of hot chicken soup instead. They eat the soup and rest. Many people believe that chicken soup is a natural and healthy cure for a cold. And in fact it really helps: drinking a lot of water is good when you have a cold. Also, the hot soup helps you breathe better and helps your throat.

And in China, it’s common to cure a headache with an egg. You boil the egg, take off the shell and rub (揉) the egg on your face, head and neck until the egg becomes cool. Some people think this helps you sleep better, too. Rubbing with the egg relaxes you. Often headaches are because of stress, so relaxing is a great idea.

What about a fever? There are a lot of different home remedies, but an interesting home remedy uses vinegar (醋). In Russia, people rub it into the skin. Vinegar makes your skin feel cooler, and it can help lower your body temperature a little.

One of the world’s oldest home remedies is tea. You can use herbal (草药) teas for all kinds of simple stomachaches and sore throats. Some popular ingredients in home remedy teas make a sore throat feel better and help you relax.

84.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.European doctors B.Simple illnesses. C.Different people. D.Asian countries.

85.What do many people think is a natural cure for a cold?

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Is your mobile phone book full of phone numbers of people you don’t really want to talk to? Do you go out with people from work or university more often than with your real friends? Do you say yes to invitations because you think you should, not because you want to? If you answered yes to at least two of these questions, then perhaps it’s time to “edit (编辑) your friends”.

Nowadays people spend a lot of time with workmates or classmates. The result is that we don’t have enough time to see our real, close friends. As our lives get busier, it becomes more important to spend the little free time with people we really want to see, people we love and who really love us.

Who are the friends you need to edit? A few years ago, I read a book about how to get rid of (摆脱) unnecessary things. It said you should ask yourself: Is it useful? Do I really like it? Do I feel better every time I look at it? If the answer is not to any one of those questions, you should throw it away. Maybe we should ask similar questions about our friends.

What kind of friends will you probably need to edit? Sometimes it’s an old friend who you used to have a lot in common with, but now you have very little or nothing to say to. Or it might be a new friend who you get on quite well with, but who is taking up too much of your time. Next time one of these people calls you and suggests a meeting, think, “Do I really want to see this person?” and if the answer is no, say no, and make an excuse. That way you’ll have more time to spend with your real friends.

88.Why does the writer list three questions at the beginning of the text?

A.To show different opinions. B.To lead into the topic.

C.To do scientific research. D.To describe his friends.

89.What questions should you ask yourself when deciding which friends to edit?

A.How smart are these friends? B.Do I really like spending time with them?

C.Are they new or old friends? D.Will they make us look good in public?

90.What is the purpose of “editing your friends”?

A.To increase the number of friends in your social circle.

B.To get much closer to your workmates and classmates.

C.To focus on spending quality time with real friends.

D.To delete all the numbers in your telephone book.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)When I was 14, my dad and I took a bike trip in the countryside. My dad chose a 16-mile section of the road for us to ride. Part of it included an old tunnel (隧道) called West Hill. This old tunnel is over a mile long!

To prepare, we checked our tires (轮胎) and bike lights. My mom made us some food. She also gave us fruit and plenty of water. In the morning, we put our bikes into the car and set off.

After a two-hour drive, we reached the road. It was a cool afternoon in early fall. But we were both wet and tired because our trip started with a long uphill climb! As we reached the West Hill Tunnel, I felt nervous as it was very dark inside! But my dad encouraged me. He said he would be right beside me. He reminded me to stay careful and keep my light on!

When we entered the tunnel, the sound of our bikes echoed through the darkness. I turned on my flashlight and saw walls covered by drawings. The air smelled like wet mud (泥土). And I felt like I was being watched! I was pretty scared, but paying attention to following my dad helped me relax. After riding half-way through, I could see light coming from the other end of the tunnel. That gave me courage to keep going. And I was so happy to ride out into the bright afternoon!

Whenever I go through hardships in life, I remember this trip. It reminds me that hope is always ahead of me. It turns on the light of hope in my heart, and it gives me courage to keep riding through life''s dark tunnels.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids. According to a new survey by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 p.m. or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.

How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is needed. But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.

“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more chances to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones (荷尔蒙) not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 p.m.

Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota changed the start time from 7:25 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the result.

98.What is the new National Sleep Foundation survey on?

A.American kids’ sleeping habits.

B.Teenagers’ sleep-related illnesses.

C.Activities to stop sleeplessness.

D.Ways to solve sleeping problems.

99.How many hours of sleep do 11-year-olds need every day?

A.7 hours. B.8 hours. C.10 hours. D.18 hours.

100.Why do teenagers go to sleep late according to Carskadon?

A.Because they are influenced by certain body chemicals.

B.Because they are excited by some bedtime activities.

C.Because they are forced to do a lot of homework.

D.Because they are allowed to go to school late.

101.Where can we probably read this passage?

A.In a news report.

B.In a science fiction.

C.In a fashion weekly.

D.In a health magazine.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)①What does love mean to you? Is it that special feeling in your heart when you see someone you like? Is it the heartbeat you get when you hold hands? Love seems to be everywhere, and at some museums around the world, love is in the air all year round.

②The Palazzo Filomela in Venice is better known as the Museum of Love. This museum was once the private home of a famous 16th-century singer. On the walls, you can see paintings of famous lovers, such as the god Cupid and his love, Psyche.

③For many, love and chocolate go hand in hand, so a visit to the Chocolate Museum in Cologne, Germany, makes sense. There, visitors can learn about the history of Chocolate and watch chocolate bars being made. The museum also gives out chocolate cakes from a three-meter-high chocolate fountain (喷泉).

④Love isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes things can go wrong, and Museum of Broken Relationships in Croatia is built to this. It has a collection of objects that people gave away from their failed relationships, and each one has a story that goes along with it. Visitors will see letters, photographs, dolls, and clothing from broken hearts all over the world.

⑤On the brighter side, the Diamond Museum Amsterdam in Holland is the place to go when you’re ready to take your love to the next level. At this museum, you can learn about diamonds, including how to tell a real one from a fake one. You may also get some ideas about which diamond to buy when you’re planning to get married.

⑥Shakespeare once wrote, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with mind.” Thanks to these special museums, we can all open our mind to—and fill our hearts with love.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Every year, when school finishes for the summer holiday, thousands of teenagers make money by doing summer jobs. We spoke to two young people who have had active, outdoor jobs and asked them about their experiences. Here is what they told us:

Aaron, 16, Australia

Summer job: lifeguard

I enjoyed my summer as a lifeguard. The beach was a great place to work, and the views of the ocean were beautiful, but there wasn’t much time to relax. It’s a serious job and someone has to watch the swimmers all the time. We always worked with a partner. Each lifeguard watched for an hour and then took a break. I’m proud to say that my partner and I saved seven people this summer.

As well as being very strong swimmers, lifeguards should be at least sixteen years old and have qualifications (资格) in first-aid and water-rescue techniques (技术). I did a training program and learned these skills before I started work.

Yasmin, 18, U.K.

Summer Job: activity leader

This summer, I worked at a children’s summer camp as an activity leader. It was tiring but fun. We organized sports, games, and activities for the kids. We also took the older children swimming in the river. In the evenings, we organized dances and quizzes. Most of the time the kids were great, and I worked with some lovely people and made some really good friends.

It was quite well-paid, and you were so busy that you didn’t have time to spend any money. I lived for free in the camp accommodations (住宿). All our meals were free, too, so I saved a lot of money over the summer.

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Little George lived in a poor village. One summer day George’s mother sent him to the field to pick up some dried wood for the fire.

George worked very hard. By the time the sun was high, he was very hot and wished for a cool place to rest and have some food. As he walked along, he found some shade, and by it were some fine, wild strawberries. “How good these will be with my bread and butter,” thought George. He picked up all of the strawberries. As he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he remembered his sick mother, alone in her dark, cold room in the village.

With this in mind, he put the strawberry back. “Shall I save them for her?” he asked himself.

He thought how refreshing they would be for her, yet was still looking at them with a longing eye.

“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said. He divided them into two heaps (堆), but each heap looked so small. He put them together again.

“I will only eat one,” he thought.

But, as he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest, and he put it back.

When the sun was beginning to sink, George set out for home. How happy he felt that he had all his strawberries for his sick mother.

He heard his mother’s faint voice calling him. “Is that you, George? I am glad you have come back. I am thirsty, and I want some tea.”

George ran to her and joyfully offered his wild strawberries.

“And you kept them for me, didn’t you?” said she, laying her hand softly on his head, with tears in her eyes.

Could the eating of the strawberries have given George half the happiness he felt at this moment?

113.Why did George go to the field?

A.To get some wood. B.To find a cool place.

C.To have a picnic. D.To pick up strawberries.

114.What do the words “with a longing eye” show about George?

C.He wanted to eat the strawberries very much. D.He wanted to find more strawberries.

115.What can we infer from the story?

A.George didn’t bring anything with him when he went to the field.

B.George’s mother was moved by her son’s care and love.

C.George will feel happier by eating the strawberries himself.

D.George’s mother would finally eat all the strawberries.

116.Which of the following will the author probably agree with?

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Everyone wants to be happy, but sometimes it can be difficult to feel happiness. That’s because we have misunderstandings about happiness that can get in the way. The good news is that changing the way you think about happiness can help you to feel more joy each day.

Dr. Mark Williamson from the charity Action for Happiness says, “Happiness is not about denying (拒绝承认) terrible feelings or being joyful all the time. It’s about making the most of good times and learning to deal with bad times.” Dr. Francesca Geens believes that happiness comes when we feel good about who we are and where our life is going.

Noticing when you feel happy and what you’re doing or what’s happening at that time can help you to find more happiness. For example, you may realize that working out a difficult puzzle makes you feel better than watching a favorite TV show. What helps you to feel happy might be different from what makes someone else happy.

Start a list of things that make you happy and keep adding to it as you discover new ones. Make time to do what you know makes you happy and remember that joy isn’t only found in what you do for yourself—being kind and thoughtful to other people helps you feel happier, too.

There are misunderstandings that can make it hard to feel happy. One is that it’s selfish to be happy when other people are sad. However, stopping yourself from being happy doesn’t make other people less sad. In fact, research has shown that happy people spread happiness to others. Another thing is thinking that you need lots of money and things to be happy. Studies have shown that when people win the lottery (彩票), they feel a short burst of happiness but they soon return to feeling the same as they did before they won. So it’s important to notice the simple things that make you feel happy.

117.What can we learn from the text about happiness?

A.It’s easy for everyone to feel happiness. B.It’s necessary to deny bad feelings.

C.It means you don’t go through bad times. D.It comes when we feel good about ourselves.

118.How does the author explain the way to feel more joy in Paragraph 3?

A.By telling a story. B.By asking a question.

C.By giving an example. D.By comparing two facts.

119.What can be learned from the text?

A.Stop being happy when others are sad.

B.Happiness can also lie in the simple things.

C.Helping others has nothing to do with happiness.

D.Winning Lottery can make you happy for a very long time.

120.Which of the following shows the structure of the text?

A. B. C. D.

Then Becky had an idea! “What if I trade you one glove for one of your scarves?”, Becky said. “Then both of our necks would be warm, and we’d each have one warm hand. We could put the other hand in our pockets.”

“Good idea!” said Steve.

After they shared the scarf and glove, they began to feel warmer.

A few minutes later Mrs. Brown appeared. “Did I just see you barter?” she asked.

Becky and Steve looked puzzled(迷惑的). “What’s barter?” Becky asked.

“Barter means trade things without using money”, Mrs. Brown explained. “You two traded a scarf and a glove so you could be warm. Did you know that traders bartered for thousands of years?”

“Really? How did it work?” Steve asked.

Mrs. Brown said, “Well, traders who had too much of one thing, such as salt or cloth or pigs, would exchange them with other traders for other things that they needed. Trading grew and developed, but it had problems.”

“Like what?” Becky asked.

“Suppose you raised chickens. You could trade the chickens and eggs for what you needed. But if the chickens got away...”

“I wouldn’t have anything to trade!”

“Exactly!” said Mrs. Brown.

“Now you see why people began to use money to trade.” Mrs. Brown added.

“Is it true that silver and gold coins were used before paper money?” Steve asked.

“Yes, but they were too heavy to carry.” Mrs. Brown said. “People then began to write promises on paper instead of trading coins. That was how paper money got its start.”

(2023·浙江杭州·统考一模)Modern inventions make our everyday lives easier, but many of these inventions also cause problems. Cars burn oil to get us where we want to go. This pollutes the air. Electric (电力 的) heat and light make our homes warm and welcoming, but they also burn up coal and oil. We need factories, but factory waste pollutes our waterways.

People believe that changing the way we live in the future may actually improve our planet’s health. We can use cleaner energy and fewer chemicals as we build the towns of tomorrow. Here are some ideas that many people think will make our planet a cleaner place to live.

More and more people will be working in their homes by using computers. Today, more electric trains are being built, and electric cars are being developed. Shopping and entertainment (娱乐) may be as close as a ride on an Earth-friendly bicycle.

We’ll grow corn, fruits, and vegetables close to home, either in our gardens or on nearby farms. The farms will use different kinds of insects to stop harmful bugs(虫子). That will help keep chemicals out of our food.

Online stores will be popular, but we’ll still have shopping malls. They will be small, just with space for parking bikes. They will use natural sunlight to cut down on energy use. They will also recycle the objects you buy there, when you are finished using them.

Solar energy is available now to some homeowners. In the future, every home will probably use this kind of energy, which is from sunlight. Our appliances, such as cookers, dish washers, washing machines and fridges, will run on it.

Singapore, as a small island country, has depended mostly on water supplies from neighboring Malaysia for a long time. Low Pei Chin, a water engineer from the government, told reporters from Agency France-Press, “Singapore is short of natural resources. That is why we are always looking for ways to explore water resources. One major plan is to “collect every drop” and “reuse endlessly”.

The government has created a highly developed system that turns wastewater into drinkable water. Reused wastewater can meet 40 percent of Singapore’s water need. The government expects to meet 55 percent of the need by the year 2060.

Most of the water is used for micro-chip producing factories. But some of it is added to the country’s drinking water supplies. The system also helps reduce ocean pollution, as only a small amount of the treated water is sent into the sea. According to the United Nations, 80 percent of the world’s wastewater runs back into the oceans without being treated or reused.

The Changi Water Reclamation Plant on Singapore’s eastern coast is the main part of the country’s recycling system. The system has a network of tunnels and high-technology treatment centers. Parts of the water treatment centers are underground and wastewater enters the center through a 48-kilometer tunnel. In one building, a network of air flow systems has been put in place to keep the water smelling as fresh as possible. When waste arrives at the plant, it goes through cleaning process before powerful pumps send it to areas above ground for more treatment. There, the treated water receives the last process, through which bacteria and viruses are cleared out. Every day, this large center can treat up to 900,000,000 liters of wastewater.

Now the country also continues to enlarge its recycling system. It will add another underground tunnel and a major water treatment center to serve the western part of the island. The government expects work on the center to be completed by 2025. By the time the project is finished, Singapore will have spent about $7.4 billion on its water treatment systems.
