early 19th-century movement to elevate the individual, the passi
ons, and the inner life. It stressed strong emotion, imagination,
freedom from classical correctness in art forms, and rebellion a
gainst social conventions. The figures include Nathaniel Hawthorn
, Washington Irving and Walt Whitman. (See the textbook, P258)Tra
nscendentalism (超验主义):is a broad, philosophical movement in New E
ngland during the Romantic era (peaking between 1835-1845). It st
ressed the role of divinity in nature and the individual’s intuit
ion, and exalted feeling over reason. The two monumental works of
Transcendentalism to express their views are Emerson’s Nature an
d Thoreau’s Walden. (See the textbook, P259)Modernism (现代主义) : Mo
dernism?was a cultural movement in the first half of the twentiet
h century that rejected the literary conventions of the nineteent
h century, opposed traditional values and techniques, and emphasi
zed the importance of individual experience. (See the textbook, P
175)Feminism (女性主义) :Feminism is a collection of movements and id
eologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal pol
itical, economic, cultural, and social rights for women. This inc
ludes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in educa
tion and employment. Lost Generation (迷惘的一代):It is a term used to
describe a group of American writers who were rebelling against
what America had become by the 1900’s. The term was popularized b
y?Ernest Hemingway, who used it as one of two contrasting epigrap
hs for his novel,?The Sun Also Rises. (See the textbook, P322)Fre
e verse is poetry that is written without proper rules about form
, rhyme, rhythm, meter, etc. Walt Whitman was considered the fath
er of free verse. (See the textbook, P285)Black Humor(黑色幽默):is a
kind of humor or a form of drama which employs?farce?and morbid?h
umor to display a marked disillusionment and cynicism. It shows h
uman beings without convictions and with little hope, regulated b
y fate or fortune or incomprehensible powers. In fact, human bein
gs are in an ‘absurd’ predicament. The wit is mordant and the hum
or sardonic, often relying on topics such as death. Joseph Heller

lements of Black Humor. (See the textbook, P374)Stream of Conscio
usness (意识流):It is a literary style that is used to represent a c
haracter’s feelings and thoughts in long continuous pieces of tex
t that have little obvious organization or structure. It was firs

rginia Woolf, and Faulkner are three of the most distinguished ex
ponents of the stream-of-consciousness. (See textbook p195)Imagis
m (意象派,意象主义) : is a movement derived from classical?Chinese and?J
apanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and economy of langu
age. Imagists have an interest in verse forms and hold that the m
ost effective means to express these momentary impressions is thr
ough the use of one dominant image. The poets, like T.S. Eliot, W
illiam Carlos Williams, E.E. Cummings, made poems of the imagist type. (See the textbook, P325)Naturalism (自然主义): It is an outgrowth and extreme form of realism. It appeared under the influence of Darwinism. Naturalists hold a pessimistic viewpoint that the fate of human being is controlled by the impersonal forces of nature.
