Abstract
Inthispaper,IresearchChuHsi’sinterpretationofT''ung-Shu(《通書》)andan
ExplanationoftheDiagramoftheGreatUltimate(《太極圖說》)tojustifyhisconceptofthe
principles(理)areactiveandthentonameitbythevitalprinciples(生生之理).
Firstly,IrecognizedthatChuHsi’sPrinciplesseemstobethecausetoChiofYinand
Yang(陰陽氣化),butasthevitalprinciple,theyactivatetheChiofYinandYang(陰陽氣
化).ItaccordswithChuHsi’sideaof“thePrinciplesattachtomaterialforce(Chi)to
operate”(理搭于氣而行).
Secondly,nomatterwhat“TheGreatUltimatethroughmovementgeneratesYang
anditthroughtranquilitygeneratesYin(太極動而生陽，靜而生陰),orthemovementof
EssenceofSincerity’s(誠體)inChuHsi’sinterpretation,ChuHsidescribesaever-lasting
anslivingprocessofTheGreatUltimate.Intheprocess,TheGreatUltimateitselfdescends
toallthingsandtheneverythingobtainsitsnaturefromit.Furthermore,theever-lasting
andlivingprocessdoesnotworkonlybymaterialforce,butalsobythePrinciples.
Consequently,althoughChuHsi’sunderstandingofthePrinciplesby“reverse
ratiocination”isdifferentfromZhouLien-xi''sreasoning(周濂溪),thePrinciplesinChu
Hsi’srealizationareactuallyactiveandliving.
