      From the University of Texas at Austin, Office of Distance Education. This guide is part of their "Distance Education: A Primer" site. Other Instructional Issues included here are: The Learner Centered Approach; Selecting a Delivery Mode, and Focusing on Content.

     

  • Instructional Development for Distance Education
      From the University of Idaho, this is Guide #3 in the series Distance Education at a Glance. It was developed by Dr. Barry Willis. Instructional development provides a process and framework for systematically planning, developing, and adapting instruction based on identifiable learner needs and content requirements. (October 1995).

  • Instructional Design for Distance Education
      From the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES). The Distance Education Program, part of the Communications, Technology and Distance Education Unit, provides leadership across USDA and the land-grant system in the systematic design, development, implementation, and evaluation of CSREES‘s distance learning efforts and those of its partners. The efforts include the process of designing and developing distance education including instructional/curriculum development, faculty/staff training, evaluation, marketing, and learner support.

      This extensive bibliography is organized by delivery method. References include articles on audiographics, computer assisted instructions, interactive television, etc. Compiled by Ms. Edrie Greer, Instructional Development Specialist for distance learning applications, East Carolina University, with assistance from mauri collins, then at Pennsylvania State University. (1996).

      The paper by Lorraine Sherry includes some definitions, history, theories, and systems of distance education. It discusses methods and strategies for designing and delivering instruction at a distance. The paper was originally published as: Issues in Distance Learning. International Journal of Distance Education, 1 (4), 337-365. (1996).

  • Strategies for Teaching at a Distance
      By Barry Willis, then Director of Distance Education, University of Alaska states: "Effective teaching at a distance is more the result of preparation than innovation. The distance educator can employ a number of strategies focusing on planning, student understanding, interaction, and teaching to ensure a successfully delivered course." (1992).
