Mrs Kathleen Searles, an 89-year-old woman, lives in Sudbury, England. She really likes history, and Alexander the Great1 is her favorite person in history. Alexander went to school in Mieza, Greece, and she wanted to visit the school. She couldn’t stand waiting in the airport, so she called a taxi to Greece. It took her three days to go through France, Germany and the Balkans.
She asked her 73-year old friend, Mrs Wendy Turner, to join her. She and her friend finished the 3,000- mile round trip2. On the way back home they also made visits to Belgrade and Munich.
The taxi trip cost her £2,000. But with food and hotel rooms, the cost was £5,000 altogether3. In fact, a plane trip would cost her only £130.
Mrs Searles didn’t mind spending the money on the trip. She said, "I am always very interested in Alexander. I’ve been to Greece before, but never to Alexander’s school. I only stayed there for four hours, but I learned a lot. I’m very happy about the trip."
Even the taxi driver enjoyed the trip. He said, "I like driving. The idea was great, and I found Austria really beautiful while driving through the country."

Traveling by train may not be the quickest way to reach places, but for thousands of tourists it is still one of the most popular ways to get to places of sightseeing around Tai-wan. People can take one of the two main railways to reach nearly all of the beautiful towns near the sea.
Before traveling in Taiwan by train, tourists should first think about how far the railway station is, and if the train is comfortable1 for the trip. Here are the three classes of trains for a long trip.
The fastest and most comfortable train is Ziqiang. Ziqiang can travel at a speed2 of 120 km an hour, while the usual speed is around 94 km an hour. All the cars3 in the train have air conditioners4, and the large windows make it easy for passengers to enjoy some beautiful views as the train runs past.       A slower and less comfortable train is Juguang. It can reach 100km an hour. But the train usually runs at 70 km an hour.
The slowest and least comfort-able of Taiwan trains is Fuxing. The tickets are cheaper, because the train stops at all the stops.

In 2002, 1,200,000 people died and 50,000,000 were injured3 in traffic accidents all over the world. Traffic accidents do harm to people.
In China, 109,000 people died in traffic accidents in 2002, and nearly 99,000 died in 2005. In the last 40 years, some rich countries like the USA, Japan and those in West Europe did some things to improve traffic safety. They also had more doctors and fast cars to help people when traffic accidents happened. Now, 70% of the world’s cars are in these countries, but people die in traffic accidents 15% less there than in other countries. In 2005, for every 10,000 cars on the road in China, 7.6 of the drivers died in traffic accidents. In the U.S. the same number of cars had only 1.7 of the drivers died and in Germany, the number was 1.37.
It’s time for us to do something for the problem. The easiest thing for all of us is to follow the traffic rules!
