shrub 树是自然风景（natural landscape）的重要组成部分，可防止水土流失（erosion），并用树叶（foliage）提供不受气候影响的（weather-sheltered）生态系统（ecosystem）。树可增加大气层（atmosphere）中氧气（oxygen）含量同时减少二氧化碳（carbon dioxide）的含量，并可调节（moderate）地面温度（ground temperature）。由于美学魅力（aesthetic appeal）与果园产品（orchard crop），树在园林建造（landscaping/landscape architecture）以及农业（agriculture）中也有重要作用（play an important role）。从树木身上获得的木材（wood）是建筑材料（building material），也是很多发展中国家（developing country）的重要能量来源（energy source）。

foliage 树可分为不同的目（order）与科（family），有着不同的生长形式（growth form）、树叶类型与形状（leaf type and shape）、树皮特征（bark characteristic）与繁殖器官（reproductive organ）。树木大概占到所有植物（plant）种类（species）【这个词单复数同形】的25%。树有很大的多样性（diversity），大多数生长在热带（tropical）地区，很多还没有被植物学家（botanist）研究过。 生长在一起的小群树木叫树丛/小树林（grove/copse/woodland/woodlot/thicket/spinney）。大片树木密生覆盖的地面叫森林（forest）。树木零散分布（scatter）的草原（grassland）叫稀树大草原（savannah）。小树叫sapling。

sapling 树的各个部分包括根（root）、树干、枝条、小树枝（twig）与叶。树干横截面会有树轮（growth ring/tree ring/annual ring）。有关的科学叫树轮年代学（dendrochronology）。树根一般埋在（be embedded）土壤（earth）中，为树木的地面生物质（above-ground biomass）提供固定（anchorage），并吸收水（water）与养分（nutrient）。树叶利用阳光（sunlight）进行光合作用（photosynthesis）。

树（tree）是多年生（perennial）木本植物（woody plant），一般有很多二级枝条（secondary branch）长在树干（stem/trunk）上面。成熟期（maturity）内高度（height）通常达到三到六米，树干直径（diameter）通常在十厘米以上【即树围/周长（girth）超过30厘米】。如果树干不止一个，高度小于三米，这样的木本植物叫做灌木/矮树（shrub/bush）。在公元（park）或花园（garden）培养（cultivate）的灌木丛叫shrubbery，修剪过的叫topiary。
