手机/移动电话在英文中有很多词，包括：mobile phone、mobile、cellphone、cell phone、handphone、wireless phone、cellular phone、cell、cellular telephone、mobile telephone与cell telephone。它是一种远程（long-range）电子设备（electronic device），使用专用基站（specialized base station）【也叫蜂窝基站（cell site）】网络（network）进行语音（voice）或数据（data）通讯（communication）。在传统电话功能之外，手机还可提供文本信息（text messaging）的短信服务（SMS/short message service）【发短信就叫text】、电子邮件（email）、互联网接入（access to Internet）、游戏（gaming）、蓝牙（Bluetooth）、红外线（infrared）、带录像的摄像头（camera with video recorder）、收发照片（photo）与视频的多媒体讯息服务（MMS/multimedia messaging service）、MP3播放器（MP3 player）、收音机（radio）及全球定位（GPS）。 手机与无线电话（radio telephone）【电台？】、对讲机（walkie talkie）、无绳电话（cordless telephone/portable phone）、汽车电话（car phone）、专业移动无线通信（professional mobile radio/PMR）、卫星电话（satellite phone）、无线网络电话（WiFi phone）都不同。

早期的模拟手机（analogue mobile phone）【也叫大哥大；现在手机基本都是数字的（digital）】 手机有很多种。除了普通手机（basic phone），还有音乐手机（musicphone）、照相手机（cameraphone）及智能手机（smartphone）。

musicphone 手机的特色功能（feature）还有很多，除了前述功能之外，还有语音呼叫（voice call）、通话记录（call register）、全球导航（GPS navigation）、闹钟（alarm）、备忘（memo）、文件记录（document recording）、个人信息管理工具（personal organizer）、个人数字助手（personal digital assistant）、内置（built-in）相机与摄像机（camcorder）【自动聚焦（autofocus）与快门（flash）】、铃声（ringtone）、互联网浏览（Internet browsing）、无线调制解调器（wireless modem）、图片下载（picture download）、电视（TV）以及游戏控制器（console）。 电源供应（power supply）通常依靠电池（battery）。GSM（Global System for Mobile communications: Groupe Spécial Mobile）手机需要一个微芯片（microchip），叫做用户识别模块（subscriber identity module/SIM），即SIM卡（SIM card）。
