A Drop In The Proverbial Bucket

Posted on 14 January 2008 at 4:18 pm in Sad.

There has been a lot of buzz here this morning about Veronica Ruiz, the IRS agent who went missing on Mt. Tam over a month ago. Apparently a body was found today, and the speculation is strong that this is indeed Ms. Ruiz.

Stories of missing folks that come up dead always make me sad. This case especially because of some of the details that have been released about Veronica’s mindset before she disappeared. Apparently she and a live-in boyfriend had just split up about two days before, which to my mind makes her ripe for being very sad and not thinking straight. Add those factors to a government issued fire arm (which she had) and the possibility of a suicide seems likely.

Having drawn this little possible conclusion makes me sad, too. I suppose it is at the heart of what makes me sad. To think that a relationship, the coming together of two people, could result in the snuffing out of one of those people is depressing to me. I know it’s a little melancholy, but this is my blog and I can be as dour as I’d like, thankyouverymuch. I suppose the thing that really gets to me is the pictures of her. They’re all of a smiling, vibrant young person. It’s tough to see those and think of someone who was so sad, so despondent, that they took their own life.

Whatever the case, and whatever the outcome, my heart goes out to everyone involved. The family, for sure, the poor schmuck who broke up with her (talk about some mental trauma), and all the other people who have heard the story. Sad. :’(
