一、表示某国人的“the＋国籍形容词”作主语 表示某国人的总称的“the＋表示某国的形容词”(如the Chinese / Japanese / British / English…中国人 / 日本人 / 英国人)作主语，谓语动词通常用复数。如： The Chinese have been making paper for 2000 years. 中国人造纸有两千多年了。 The French are famous for their food. 法国人因法国菜而出名。 The British drink a great deal of tea. 英国人饮茶很多。 The Swiss have been neutral for centuries．瑞士人几世纪以来都保持中立。 Why do the English think they are so wonderful? 为什么英国人认为自己那样了不起?
二、表示某一类人的“the+adj. ”作主语 表示某一类人的“the+adj. (如the rich / poor; old / young; living / dead; weak / strong; blind / deaf / killed / injured / killed / unemployed )”作主语，谓语动词一般用复数。如： The rich live while the poor die. 富者生，穷者死。 The homeless need more help from the government. 无家可归的人需要政府给予更多帮助。 Do you think the rich should pay more taxes t0 help the poor? 你认为富人是否应当多交点税来帮助穷人? (from www.) 三、表示不同人或事物的并列结构作主语 表示不同人或物的(both)A and B作主语，谓语动词用复数。如： Both New York and London have traffic problems. 纽约和伦敦都存在交通问题。 四、both / few等加复数名词作主语 both / few / several / many(+复数名词)作主语，谓语动词用复数。如： Few words are best. 少说话最好。(谚语) Both of them are from Lisbon. 两人都来自里斯本。 Both were in love with Nancy. 两人都爱上了南希。 Both my parents like literature. 我的父母都喜欢文学。 Both the children are now in schoo1. 两个小孩现在都在上学。 Few of them are of any good. 它们没有几个有用。 Few of my acquaintances like Sheila. 我认识的人很少人喜欢希拉。 五、cattle / people / the police等作主语 cattle(牛) / people(人们、人民) / the police(警察之总称)等作主语，谓语动词用复数。如： Cattle eat grass. 牛吃草。 The police haven’t got a single lead yet. 警察到现在还未获得一点线索。 The police are holding the suspect. 警察拘留了嫌疑犯。 The police are looking into the complaint. 警察在了解这项投诉。 People often migrate to another town to find work. 人们常常迁移到另一座城市来找寻工作。 六、本身以s结尾的复数名词作主语 the Olympic Games / clothes / goods(货物) / things(情况) / feeling(感情) / surroundings(环境) / belongings(财产) / earnings(薪水) / the Ural Mountains (乌拉尔山脉) / manners(礼貌) / congratulations等作主语，谓语动词用复数。如： Things were in terrible order. 情况一团糟。 The Olympic Games begin with a parade of all the competing nations. 奥运会以参赛各国运动员的列队行进开始。
