Serving "grassroots", Building a Top Platform for Public Diplomacy

People Forum held the strategic symposium of "Reporting for Foreign Services" Sunday, celebrating the first anniversary of its official launch.


Leaders from Information Office of State Council,United Front Work Department of CPC, presidents of official Internet media outlets and heads in charge of the relevant communication projects happily gathered together under the same roof, bringing along with them the heartfelt celebrations to People Forum and, the pertinent and very constructive opinions.

How to make the official communication channel more accessible to the grassroots people is the issue of high concerns to almost all the participants. "Today, the public opinions are more vocal than ever with the popularity of the Internet and other social networks. The strength of the grassroots cannot be neglected, if an online communication space is trying to bring its role into full play," said Zhang Xingbo, President of China Daily website.

His statement was echoed by many other participants. They all agreed serving the public is the first and foremost goal to accomplish for any mass media, and the Internet, compared with other traditional media, proves to be a faster and more user-friendly mass communication channel, as it attracts the direct and immediate exchanges of information and ideas, and communication must be two-way. Perfect interaction is not only the distinguishing feature of the Internet media, but should be a goal to be always sought after by the online communication platforms of any form, in particular, People Forum, as covered in their discussion.

While approving the accomplishments scored by People Forum over the year, the participants also pointed out the shortcomings and put forward suggestions on PF's to-be correcting job and how to improve in content and coverage.

"To serve the audience well, you have to firstly think about who is your target audience," remarked Liu Zhengrong, Deputy Director of Internet Bureau, Information Office of State Council. He placed high expectations upon People Forum, hoping it to act as a top-notched platform for public diplomacy while fulfilling its mission as an online community to solicit the public opinions and collect the mass wisdom.


"People Forum should stand at a new height getting closer to the grassroots, listening to and transmitting the people's voice to contribute to China's development and the world peace," Mr. Liu said.
