A

When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possible – and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite and better sleep patterns. “People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good “So it can help save on the wear and tear on our system and allow people to feel more energetic.”

So when someone has hurt you, calm yourself first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don’t wait for an apology. “Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing,” says Dr. Luskin. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting a very long time.” Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who upset you. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. Finally, try to see things from the other person’s perspective(视角). You may realize that he or she was acting out of ignorance, fear – even love. To gain perspective, you may want to write a letter to yourself from that person’s point of view,

65. The text is mainly written to explain _______.

    A. how to keep yourself from being hurt

    B. how to stay mentally healthy

    C. how and when to remain calm

    D. why and how to pardon others

66. According to the writer, what is the right way to calm down after being hurt?

    A. Try to figure out why you get hurt.

    B. Write a letter to the person who hurt you.

    C. Persuade yourself to accept what others have done to you.

    D. Think about pleasant things and forget about the hurt.

67. Dr. Luskin advises us not to wait for an apology after being hurt because _______.

    A. we are not patient enough                    B. we’d feel worse accepting others’ apology

    C. people never want to apologize                D. people don’t mean it when they apologize

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority (优先,重点) it must be given over general language development and writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling.

If spelling becomes the only key point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing not to use adventurous language. That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than spelling ability only.

I was once shocked to read a teacher’s comment on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing: “This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling mistakes!” It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil’s spelling ability in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had failed to read the composition which contained some beautiful expressions of the child’s deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the mistakes, but if his priorities had centered on the child’s ideas, an expression of his appreciation would have given the pupil more encouragement to seek improvement.

72. The underlined expression “play safe” in paragraph two probably means _______.

  A. to write carefully                                                B. to do as teachers say

  C. to use dictionaries frequently                             D. not to write words one is not sure of

73. Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that _______.

  A. they may spend more time teaching writing techniques

  B. they may have less trouble in correcting mistakes

  C. students will have more confidence in writing

  D. students will learn to be independent of teachers

74. The writer seems to think that the teacher’s judgment on that sensitive piece of writing is _______.

  A. reasonable                 B. unfair                      C. foolish                           D. careless

75. Teachers are different in their opinions about _______.

  A. the necessity of teaching spelling

  B. the role of spelling in general language development

  C. the way of teaching spelling

  D. the importance of the basic grammar

 D

A study published in September suggests there is a surprising way to get people to avoid unhealthy foods: change their memories. Scientist Elizabeth Loftus of the University of California at Irvine asked volunteers to answer some questions on their personalities and food experiences. “One week later,” Loftus says, “we told those people we’d fed their answers into our smart computer and it came up with an account of their early childhood experiences.” Some accounts included one key additional detail: “You got sick after eating strawberry ice-cream.” The researchers then changed this detail into a manufactured (人为促生的) memory through leading questions “Who were you with? How did you feel?” By the end of the study, up to 41% of those given a false memory believed strawberry ice-cream once made them sick, and many said they’d avoid eating it.

When Loftus published her findings, she started getting calls from people begging her to make them remember hating chocolate or French fries. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. False memories appear to work only for foods you don’t eat on a regular basis. But most important, it is likely that false memories can be implanted (灌输) only in people who are unaware of the mental control. And lying to a patient is immoral, even if a doctor believes it’s for the patient’s benefit.

Loftus says there’s nothing to stop parents from trying it with their overweight children, “I say, wake up. Parents have been lying about Father Christmas for years, and nobody seems to mind. If they can prevent diseases caused by fatness and all the other problems that come with that, you might think that’s a more moral lie. Decide that for yourself.”

76. Why did Loftus ask the volunteers to answer some questions?

A. To improve her computer program.

B. To find out their attitudes towards food.

C. To find out details she can make use of.

D. To predict what food they’ll like in the future.

77. What did Loftus find out from her research?

A. People believe what the computer tells them.

B. People can be led to believe in something false.

C. People tend to forget their childhood experiences.

D. People are not always aware of their personalities.

78. According to the study, people may stop having a certain food if they______.

A. learn it is harmful for health

B. lie to themselves that they don’t want it

C. are willing to let doctors control their minds

D. think they once had a bad experience of eating it

79. What is the biggest concern with the method?

A. Whether it is moral.                                      B. Who it is best for.

C. When it is effective.                                     D. How it should be used.

Section C

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A.     There are few statues in the Middle East.

B.      Art is a good means for people to know about religions.

C.      Artists express their feelings and opinions in their works.

D.     People know more about our culture through learning art history.

E.      Art is more objective than history itself.

F.      Art history provides information of different places and people.

80.

A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general history classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics and war. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions, and psychology.

81.

In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors – or of people very different from our own – can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding than can be found in most history books.

82.

In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented; that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Francisco Goya was perhaps the first truly “political” artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its misuse of power over people. Over a hundred years later, symbolic images were used in Pablo Picasso’s Guernica to express the horror of war. Meanwhile, on another continent, the powerful paintings of Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros – as well as the works of Alfredo Ramos Martins – depicted these Mexican artists’ deep anger and sadness about social problems.

83.

In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. For hundreds of years in Europe, religious art was almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that depicted people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t read, they could still understand biblical stories in the pictures on church walls.

84.

By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic belief that status are unholy.

Section B

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

People in Poland take their pleasure seriously. They like to have an aim even when spending the time which is entirely their own. During the summer, people start work very early in the morning so that they can finish early and enjoy a leisurely afternoon. It is difficult to imagine Polish people going aimlessly for a walk in the country, though they might go to pick wild fruit, to visit a place of historical importance or to walk 20 km as a training exercise. They are often admired for their immense enjoyment of the arts. All parks are beautifully cared and are for the use and enjoyment of the people. Quite ordinary people will talk with obvious delight about concerts. There is nearly always a crowd at the door of the theatre, asking for returned tickets. People in Poland now have far more leisure time and more money than ever before. It is therefore possible to spend the weekends in many new ways. Many people now have over 20 days holidays a year. This provides an opportunity for holidays in the country or at the seaside.

Questions

11. What is special about the Polish way of spending leisure time?

12. For what does the author admire the Polish people?

13. What do we learn from the passage?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

Supermarkets are big stores that provide a wide choice of foods and other products. In the United States, traditional supermarkets are facing competition from even bigger stores. They are also facing competition from stores with more choice of fresh, natural foods.

Many supermarkets are chains, stores owned by one company. Price competition is fierce in the grocery industry. Most Americans still spend the most money at supermarkets. But traditional supermarkets have lost some of their business. Many people are changing where they buy groceries. They are also changing the kinds of groceries they want.

New competitors are winning business because they are even larger than supermarkets. And they have lower prices. Wal-Mart supermarkets sell groceries as well as clothes, tools, electronic equipment and everything else. Costco membership stores are also known for low prices. Discount stores like Wal-Mart and Costco buy their goods in huge amounts and sell at prices that supermarkets usually cannot equal.

Competition has also come from stores, like Whole Foods Market, that sell natural foods.

Yet supermarkets are changing too. Many have cut prices. And many are offering more fine foods and organic products which are free of added chemicals or drugs. Since two thousand, Americans have bought more organic food from supermarkets than from any other kind of store. Also, supermarkets are able to offer greater choices of similar products than might be found at their discount competitors.

Questions:

14. Which of the following are supermarkets unable to handle?

15. Which statement is correct according to the passage?

16. What is the main theme of this passage?

Section C

Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

M: Good morning.

W: Good morning, Doctor.

M: Well, what’s the trouble?

W: I feel hot and feverish, Doctor. I’ve got a trouble sore throat.

M: Yes.

W: It’s probably only flu, but I thought I’d better see you.

M: Quite right. I don’t think I’ve seen you before, have I? Are you new to this area?

W: Yes, I am. I’ve only just come here.

M: Right. Now let’s have a look at you. If you just slip off your coat and blouse, I’d like to listen to your chest. Sit straight up. Cross your arms. That’s it.

W: Oooh!

M: Sorry, the stethoscope is a bit cold. Now breathe in. A deep breath. That’s it. Cough. Thank you. Now again. Sit up. Cough. Fine. That’s all. Now you can slip on your blouse again.

W: My eyes have been sore and painful, Doctor.

M: Have they? Now I’ll just take your temperature. Just put it under your tongue. That’s it.

W: Mmmm.

M: I see you’re a student at the training college.

W: Mmmm.

M: My daughter’s thinking of becoming a teacher.

W: Mmmm?

M: Now, let’s have a look. It is a bit high. Now I want to examine your throat. Open wide, say “Ah”.

W: Aaaaaahh. Aaaaaahh.

M: Yes, it does look a bit sore. But there’s nothing to be alarmed about. A slight virus infection. You’d better have a couple of days in bed.

W: What about the throat, Doctor?

M: I’m giving you a course of antibiotics. Take one capsule every four hours. Here’s the prescription.

W: Thank you, Doctor. Goodbye.

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.

W: As far as transportation is concerned, I think there’re going to be huge changes in the way people use cars, they will probably have made laws about what kind of car you can own and when you can use it.

M: And I bet it’ll be impossible for people to use cars whenever they like. There’ll just be too many of them on the roads.

W: Exactly. People will have to rely on other modes of transportation – especially trains.

M: Why do you say that?

W: Well, we won’t be able to use cars, and airports take up too much space. With the supply of land for airports shrinking around the world, there are going to be fewer airports and fewer plane flights. That leaves trains.

M: Huh. So you think there will be more efficient train systems between cities.

W: Sure. There may even be trains going under the oceans to connect the major continents.

M: Under the oceans? That’s unbelievable!
