同理,no matter what; no matter who也是相同用法:
No matter what happens, I will assist you.
不管發生什麼,我會支援你。
或:whatever happens, I will be on your side.
No matter who he is, he has no right to interfere in your privacy.
不管他是誰,都沒有權力干擾你的隱私。
或:
whoever he is, he has no right to do so.
(14)would rather…than; had rather…than; prefer…rather than; would sooner…than; better be …than都有「寧可…而不」、「與其…不如」的意思。
例如:
I would rather let others be unkind to me than I (be unkind) to them.
我寧可別人負我 ,而我不負人。
(後面的be unkind可省去 )
或:
I had rather let others be ungrateful to me than I (be ungrateful) to them.
(後面的be ungrateful可省去)
或:
I prefer to let others be ungrateful to me rather than I (be ungrateful) to them.
(後面的be ungrateful可省去)
或:
I would sooner be unkind to myself than be unkind to others.
(多半用反身代名詞myself,而不用me)
或:
Better be a kind person to others than an unkind one.
(15)long for; on the lookout for; look for; have an ambition of; anxious都有「渴望」、「很想」的意思。
例如:
The old man longs for a healthy life.
老人渴望健康的身體。
The poor are longing for a better life.
窮人很想有較好的生活。
Mr. Wang has an ambition of someday becoming a high-ranking official.
王先生渴望有天成為高官。
Mr. A is on the lookout for a new job.
A先生很想找個新工作。
(on the lookout for= looking for)
至於to be determined to; to be resolved to; to make one's mind都有「決心要 」、「打定主意」的意思:
I am determined to continue writing plain, useful and practical English for my Chinese readers.
我一定要繼續為我老中讀者寫些淺白日常有用的英語。
(I am determined to = I am resolved to )
Mr. A is anxious to get an advanced degree in math.
A先生很想取得數學的高學位。
(anxious或用eager)
(16)scarcely…when; hardly….before; no sooner…than; as soon as; the moment;…immediately after都有「一…就…」、「剛…就…」的意思。
例如:
I had scarcely finished writing an article when I heard the phone ringing.
我剛寫完一篇文章,就聽到電話響。
(主要句通常用過去完成式had finished,附屬句用過去簡單式heard,表示前後兩個不同時間)
I had hardly mowed my lawn before it started to rain.
我一割完草坪,就下起雨來。
(主要句用過去完成式had mowed,附屬句用過去簡單式started)
或:
I had no sooner finished my lawn mowing than it began to rain.
=No sooner had I finished my lawn mowing than it started to rain.
(no sooner放在句首時,動詞had要放在主詞I前面)
或:
As soon as I had finished writing an article, I heard the phone ringing.
或:
The moment I had finished writing an article, I heard the phone ringing.
或:
Immediately after I had mowed my lawn, it began to rain.
(Immediately after=right after= shortly after)
