Unit 7 What does he look like? Teaching Design

 

 

 

Teaching Aims:

1. Enable students to have a general understanding of how to talk about people's physical appearance.

2. Enable students to tackle some essential vocabularies and patterns about describing people. Provide them with necessary skills and methods.

3. Create various chances for students to describe the persons they're familiar with, such as classmates, family members, teachers, idols, etc.

4. Encourage students' self-expression, participation collaboration through various devices.

Pictures, Videos, Computer, Powerpoint files

Teaching Methods Student-centered, Task-basked

Teaching Procedure

Lead-in Greetings and introduce teaching aims.

Presentation:

1. General introduction about people's appearance.

2. Teach Ss how to describe a person in details, age, height, build, hair, eye, looks.

Practice: Practice talking about people's appearance in pairs or in groups.

Activities:

Design some tasks so as to give students further chances to practice what they've learnt.

Homework:

A composition: Describe a person you like or you're familiar with

Sum-up Vocabulary:

Age: young, middle-aged, old

Height: short, pretty short, medium height, pretty tall, tall

Build: thin/slim, medium build, fat/heavy

Hair: long/short, black/blond/white/grey/;straight/curly,

Looks: handsome, good-looking, beautiful, pretty

Patterns:

What does sb. look like? What's one's appearance?

What's one's age? How old is sb?

How tall is sb? What's one's height?

Class Type(lead-in):

导入课就是围绕一中心话题,通过大信息良输入,多媒体辅助,不同任务的设置来完成对该话题的整体理解和感知。首先教师通过 free-talk;English songs, stories or jokes 等一些 Warm-up Activities 为学生创设一个轻松、愉悦的学习氛围 ,然后引出中心话题,鼓励学生谈论他们对这一话题的理解和背景知识。教师以话题为中心,在多媒体的辅助下,介绍常用词汇、基础语法、重要句型,同时给学生提供大量的视、听、说素材,为他们设计不同的任务型活动,让学生在练中学习语言、感知语言。

Appearance

Step 1: Greetings and introduce teaching aims (2-3 mins) T-C;

Good morning, everyone. I'm your new English teacher today. My name is Sally. Nice to meet you! This is the first time for us to learn English together. I'm quite sure we can have a wonderful happy time together, because I know you like learning English, am I right?

I'm your new English teacher. Who's your old English teacher? Do we look the same? Of course not. Look, I'm tall, but he's short. My hair is long while his is short. I'm pretty. What about him? Do you think he's ugly? Both of us like our students and enjoy English teaching.

So today we're going to learn how to talk about people's appearance. We'll talk about what sb. looks like by learning some vocabularies and patterns. Hopefully it will help you a lot in your daily life.

Step 2: General introduction about people's appearance. T-I, Chain exercise

When we talk about people's appearance, we use lots of adjectives. Please tell me your name and give an adj to describe yourself. For example.

My name is Sally. I'm tall.

(ask students in random to give me answers)

Well done, everyone. Now let's learn how to talk about what sb. looks like.

What do we usually say when we describe a person. We say it's age, height, build, hair, eyes and looks by using some adjs. (Students may give help when necessary, T shows the powerpoint files; teach the word; appearance, height and build)

Step 3: Describe a person in details.

A. Age: (T- individual)

How old are you? You're very young.

What about your mum, how old is your mum?

Is she young? No, she's middle-aged.

And your grandfather? What's his age? He's really old.

Do you want to be young all the time? What about your grandmother?

(show powerpoint about age)

Talk about the pictures and the patterns.

Ask 1 or 2 students to say something about their teachers.

B. Height:( Ask five students to come to front, Ask Mr. Qi to give me the names)

* Show the picture and read after the new words.

* Now I'll invite five students to come to the front.

(Who can say something about their height, practice loudly, ask 2-3 students to talk about their height)

Sb. is short, pretty short, medium height, pretty tall, tall.

T asks Ss questions and asks them to go back.

Introduce yourself and then talk about your age and height.

T added questions when necessary.

Do you want to grow taller? Do you worry about your height?

Don't worry. Usually great men are usually very short.

C. Build (Jay Chou,Chenglong, Liuhuan)

Jay Chou: Do you know him? What's his job? What does he look like?

Is he heavy? No, he's very thin.

Cheng Long: What's his name? What is he good at?

Is he an actor or actress? What does he look like?

He has a medium build.

Liu Huan: This is Liu Huan. What does he do? Is he a famous singer?

What does he look like? Look, his hair is flying in the air.

He looks really cool. He's very heavy.

Talk about your classmates' build. Give me three names and

Say what they look like. (age, height, build)

D. Hair: ( long/short;black/blond/brown/red, curly/ straight/wavy hair)

Talk about the six given pictures first:

Can you give me some adj to describe hair

Well done. When we talk about hair. We usually talk about if it’s long

or short, and hair's colour and it's type.

Look, is her hair long or short? What colour is her hair?

Her hair is long, black and straight. We say she has long black straight

hair. Repeat after me.

Say something about other person's hair.

Mustache: hair grows above your upper lip.

Beard: hair grows on your chin.

Could you say something about your own hair or your neighbour's hair.

I have... and my neighbour has...

Step 4: Watch some short videos and talk about people's appearance.

Pic. 1 What does Suzy look like? young, medium height, long blackstraight hair, wear a red T-shirt, pretty. (T asks, S answer in random.)

Pic. 2. What's his name? Do you know his occupation? What does he look like? (Who can ask questions? Who can answer)

Bill, professor, old, white, straight hair, Maybe he's tall. He's quite heavy. Wear a pair of glasses.

Pic 3: What do you know about the young man. (Describe him by using one or two sentences. )A news reporter, young and handsome, tall, short brown hair (Do you want to be a news reporter)

Pic. 4: a newscaster, short curly hair, big eyes, beautiful, a white suit. young, slim. (T- S)

Pic 5: Kate, at home, long, blond curly hair, young , medium height and a little thin, wearing jeans and green T- shirt.

(Anybody who can ask questions about the picture. Find someone answer.)

Pic 6: Nile Morry. Newsreporter, old, bald, mustache, heavy.

Pic 7: What does the woman like? middle-aged, short white straight hair, really heavy, short and strong, She needs to do more exercise.

Pic 8: David Beckham: tall and handsome, middle-aged, long blond hair. His hair looks very cool. He is a football player and he plays for Real Madrid. (practice in pairs , ask two students to come to the front to talk about him.)

Step 5: Go over the vocabularies and patterns we've just learned.

Just now we've learnt some vocabularies about people's appearance. Do you still remember what they are? Now look. Height: give me some adjs about height. Can you spell medium, Age, Looks, Hair, Build: (arouse students' interest) Here are some patterns for you to remember.

“Go through patterns very quickly”

If I want to know a person's appearance, what question can I ask? Age; Height; Hair; Clothes.

Step 6: Practice Stage: Learn to describe people in several sentences.

1.Show several pictures of Mr. Qi. Who's this handsome guy? What's his English name? I know you love your English teacher. So please talk about him by using the vocabularies and patterns we learned today. You can practice in pairs. Or you can say something by yourself.

Ask 2 students to come to the front in turn. Let Ss to describe him. Each student can only say one sentence. Give as many sentences as possible. (random order)

Step 7: Develop Stage:

Ask students to write down 3-4 sentences about their classmate. “Developing writing and speaking)

1. I'm really happy that you can use some English to describe people successfully. Now please take out a piece of paper, then write down 3-5 sentences about one of your classmates. After writing, I'll ask someone to read the description so that others can guess who he is.

2. The one who guesses the right answer can have a chance to read his description.

Step 8: Guessing Game

Ask two students to come to the front, facing the class. Then the teacher will show others a picture of their classmates, famous people or their teachers. The students try to describe the person.(only one chance); Let the two guess who is in the photo. He’ll receive a present if he is successful in guessing. “

Step 9: Interview: Activate their use of language.

Now it's interview time. Again it's a good time to practice your oral English. You can find someone and interview him/her by asking them questions. (your classmate, the teachers in the room, or any one else in the room.)You have only two-minutes. After that, please say something about the person's appearance in 5-6 sentences.

Homework

Write a short composition. Describe someone you like.

Find a photo of someone you like. Put it on a piece of paper. Write a short paragraph about the person's appearance.
