St.Catherine

This is a rare figurine made by Meissen in 1737. The figure is of St. Catherine of Genoa and is one of only three figurines made of this model. They were comissioned by Queen Maria Josepha of Saxony and Poland and mentioned in Kaendlers records in January of 1737. She is superbly modelled with an arrow piercing her heart and lots of nice gold trim. She was painted when first made which is very important! She is in great condition with a firing crack underneath the base, the index finger has a chip, the pinky on that hand is missing the tip, the top of the arrow is missing and a few minor chips to the halo. Amazingly there is almost no wear to the gilding and there are no restorations at all! The figure is 7.25 inches tall. It is marked underneath with a faint crossed swords mark. Flat base underneath with the airhole typical of these early pieces. The model is mentioned in the book "Meissener Porzellan" by R.Rueckert for a good reference.
