How do you learn best？
This week we asked students at New
Star High
School about11 the best ways to learn
more English12. Many said they learnt by using English. Some
students had more specific suggestions. Lillian Li, for example13,
said the best way to learn new words was by reading English magazines. She said
that memorizing14 the words of pop songs also helped a little15.
When we asked about studying grammar, she said, "I never study grammar.
It's too boring16."
Wei Ming feels differently. He's been learning17 English for six
years and really loves it. He thinks studying grammar is a great18
way to learn a language. He also thinks that watching English movies isn't a
bad way because he can watch19 the actors say the words. Sometimes,
however, he finds watching movies frustrating because the people speak too
quickly.
Liu Chang said that joining the English club at school was the best way to
improve her English. Students get lots of practice and they also have fun20
She added that having conversations with friends was not helpful at all.
"We get excited about something and then end up21 speaking in
Chinese," she said.

刘畅说，在学校加入英语俱乐部是她提高英语水平的最佳方法。同学们在俱乐部里有许多实践的机会，也有很多乐趣。她补充说，和同学们用英语对话没有一点儿作用。她说：“我们会因为对某些事情激动而讲汉语。”

How I learned to learn English

Last year/ my English class/ was
difficult/ for me. First of all, it wasn't easy/ for
me/ to understand the teacher/ when she talked
to the class. To begin with, she spoke/ too quickly, and I couldn't understand every word.
Later on, I realized that/ it doesn't
matter/ if you don’t understand
/every word. Also/ I was afraid to speak/ in class, because/ I thought/ my classmates/ might laugh
at me. I couldn't always make complete sentences,
either. Then/ I started to watch English-language TV. It helped/
a lot. I think
that/ doing lots of listening practice/ is
of the secrets of becoming a good language learner. Another thing/
that I found/ very difficult/ was
English grammar. So/ I decided
to take lots of grammar notes/ in every class. Then/ I started to write my own original
sentences/ using the grammar/(that) I was
learning. It’s amazing/ how much/ this helped.
Now/ I am enjoying learning English/ and I got an A/ this term. My
teacher is
very impressed.

去年，英语课对我来说很难。首先，听懂老师讲课对我来说就不容易。刚开始那会儿，老师讲话速度快，我不是每一个单词都能听懂。后来，我意识到是否听懂了每一个单词并没有什么关系。因为担心同学们取笑，所以我也害怕在班上讲英语。我也并不总是能把句子讲完整。再后来，我开始看英语电视节目。看英语电视节目对我的帮助很大。我认为进行大量的听力训练是学好一门语言的密诀之一。我发现很困难的另一方面是英语语法。因此，我决定每节课记大量的语法笔记。课后，我开始用所学的语法知识造句。此举产生了令人叫绝的功效。现在，我喜欢学习英语了。本学期我的英语成绩得了A。我的英语老师对我的进步印象很深。
