NORTHUMBERLAND, Britain, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Britain's ancient Hadrian's Wall on the border of England and Scotland was lighted by 400 giant balloons Friday night meant to demonstrate a relay of messages.
The artwork, called Connecting Light, was designed to convey messages across the country along the ancient wall's 73-mile (117 km) remains through pulses of light from more than 400 illuminated giant balloons on Friday and Saturday.
"The beautiful installation invites us to reimagine borders as places not where people are separated, but where we meet and communicate," said Ruth Mackenzie, director of the Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival.
The artwork was created by New York-based digital arts collective YesYesNo with Zachary Lieberman.
"Our system is set up to communicate messages, to turn messages into light," Lieberman said.
People could write on the Connecting Light website a message, which will later be transmitted along the wall from one balloon to another with the change of colors.
It is not only accessible to visitors, but can also be viewed via the internet so that people everywhere in the world will be able to interact with the installation and watch the messages appear in the balloons.
