HOUSTON, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Methodist Hospital in Houston becomes the first hospital in the United States to use a new robotic system to treat patients with peripheral vascular disease, a medical publication said Monday.
Peripheral vascular disease occurs when those arteries not inside the brain or the heart become narrowed and blocked.
The vascular surgery team, led by Alan Lumsden, chair of Methodist's cardiovascular surgery department and medical director of the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, is using the Magellan Robotic System to unblock the arteries of patients with blocked peripheral arteries, according to the Oct. 15 issue of the Texas Medical Center News.
Named for the 16th century Portuguese naval explorer, the Magellan Robotic System is controlled from a workstation outside the operating room. The surgeon sits at the system's master console, and views ultrasound images of the patient's blood vessels in real time on a video monitor.
