The Tragedy of Tess

    When it comes to the tragedy of Tess, you can’t deny that the cruel social environment impose a relentless impact on her life. Given the circumstances that almost all people even including Angel value the social status, the so-called chastity and religion, how could Tess’s nature be to blame?

    Although Tess’s natural strength and spontaneity is so tender that she has to be bullied, the harsh reality cannot be converted. Here goes two living examples. Alec is the representative of the bourgeois society’s authority, the wealth and evil, while Angel is the symbol of the broad masses of the people. At the very beginning, it seems that Angel is a beam of sunlight in society shrouded in darkness, but it is beyond our imagination that when he said: forgiveness does not apply to the case. You were one person; now you are another. He also can’t break away from the worldly shackles. And he was just the slavery of those absurd traditional moral concepts.

     So you see, in such a grim background imprisoned by the conventional moral concepts, Tess is turning turtle towards the cruelty. As far as I am concerned, her miserable destiny is mainly attributed to the society around her undoubtedly. Tess is simply standing for the underprivileged person. However, she was once regarded as the fresh and virginal daughter of nature. Unfortunately, Alec robbed of her chastity which means all her life. Only if there is still someone giving a hand to her rather than humiliate her, may she never end up so off. 

     I show sympathy to Tess. The tragedy of her verily deserves thinking. I think the society can really affects one’s whole life. Why are people so cold-blooded? What causes it on earth? From my perspective, the stereotype and snobbism drive people to chase the higher position and undervalue the true inner. Tess is a kind-hearted girl. She complains about her encounter at no time. Besides, she does not just obey the fate, but considering there is no better way, she is forced to accept the reality. Nevertheless, her goodness is drowned in people’s secular spectacles.

      Maybe the society should be a bit more enlightened. And people’s alleged orthodox concepts are also supposed to be transformed into the rational ones. Thus, Tess might not be the victim of the society at that time. Then again, Tess is the goddess of kindness. She should have been respected. What she suffered was pathetic. What she had undergone conjures up our true heart to rebel the evil. -

Despite that the paradox about Tess’s destiny will never end, I strongly believe that the oppression made her nature vulnerable. Sincerely, I hold mercy to her.
