Pocket Change
So far today I’ve spent over 50 yuan. I bought coffee for myself and a friend and a bottle of water. The day’s only just starting and I need to buy breakfast and lunch as well as [w]fork[/w] out (支付) for [w]transport[/w]. I don’t lead a [w]self-indulgent[/w] lifestyle and my expenditure doesn’t exceed my income. Day-to-day life can be expensive, especially city-living, so I find it difficult to imagine myself in a position where I only have 6.3 yuan a day to live on. This is the challenge set to mark the International Day for the [w]Eradication[/w] of [w]Poverty[/w] (国际消除贫困日) by the World Food Program (世界粮食计划署) and the China Foundation for Poverty [w]Alleviation[/w] (中国扶贫基金会).
Just think about all the [w]unnecessary[/w] things we buy every day: that bar of chocolate, a can of coke or small [w]trinket[/w] (小装饰品) from a street seller. All these things we take for granted or even see as a given right are [w]luxuries[/w] to many people—simply being able to afford a bowl of [w]plain[/w] rice and keeping themselves full [w]throughout[/w] the day is a challenge.
Think for a moment, what was the last thing you bought? Did you really need it? The answer is probably “no”; you didn’t need it. China’s economy may be getting stronger and many more people can [w]afford[/w] luxury brands. However, there are still over 100 million people living below the poverty line. It can be difficult to imagine when looking around all we see are [w]expensive[/w] cars and top-brand bags.
Just what can 6.3 yuan buy you in larger cities like Shanghai in today’s China? [w]Considering[/w] a bottle of water is around 1 yuan and 1 portion of plain boiled rice is 2 yuan [w]depending[/w] where you go. [w]Feeding[/w] yourself for a day on just 6.3 yuan is possible—but difficult—and there will be little variety in your diet; getting the [w]nutrients[/w] our bodies need is nearly impossible.
All of the points raised so far haven’t even taken [w]rent[/w], bills or transport into account. Just think, most of us will spend some people’s daily budget on a single chocolate bar (a small bar of Dove is about 6.5 yuan)!
The famous singing group ABBA once sang, “Money, money, money, must be funny, in a rich man’s world.”
