[听力材料]

 (Text 1)

W: Would you like a banana or some nuts?

M: I’m dying of thirst. I would actually love a pear.

(Text 2)

W: Ted, you should stop smoking and drinking. You know, beer and cigarettes will burn a hole in your pocket.

M: You’re right. I should save money for a laptop.

(Text 3)

W: Would you like to order now, sir?

M: I’d like to wait a little longer. My friend still hasn’t arrived yet.

W: OK.

(Text 4)

M: What will you buy for Dad’s birthday?

W: I’m thinking about a tie.

M: Really? He already has five ties. I’m sure he would prefer a T?shirt or a pair of shoes.

W: Um ... perhaps I’ll buy him a T?shirt.

(Text 5)

M: Excuse me! How can I get to the nearest hospital, please?

W: You can take the T?5 from here, but then you will still have to walk one block to the hospital. It’s better if you can take the T?9 and get off at the last stop.

M: Is it far?

W: It will take you about half an hour on the T?9.

(Text 6)

W: I’ve heard there’s a rock concert this Saturday evening. Would you like to go?

M: I’d like to, but my grandma is coming to visit tomorrow.

W: But tomorrow is only Wednesday. Is she going to stay until Saturday?

M: Oh, she hasn’t seen me for months and she misses me. So she’ll stay here until next Monday.

W: Did you grow up with her?

M: No. I was brought up by my parents, of course. But my grandma often came to see me when I was growing up.

(Text 7)

M: Mary, why are you home? Shouldn’t you be in your clothes shop right now?

W: My feet hurt. I’m really fed up with standing in the shop all day.

M: What do you mean? Do you want to sell it?

W: No. I’m considering hiring a shop assistant to help me.

M: That’s a good idea. Ah, I have another idea — you could sell your clothes online. That way you don’t have to stand up all the time and you can work at home.

W: I’ve already thought about that. Mike has promised to help me with it.

M: Mike has an online shop. I’m sure he can help you.

W: I hope so.

(Text 8)

W: Ted, I’m going to visit my professor tomorrow. Should I take anything with me?

M: Yes, it’s a good idea to take a small present, but nothing too expensive. I suggest you get her a book or some flowers or maybe a bottle of wine.

W: Flowers sound great. By the way, she asked me to arrive at half past six. Should I arrive earlier or on time?

M: You should arrive five to ten minutes late. Don’t forget to tell your professor if you will be there fifteen minutes late.

W: Then I’ll arrive five minutes late.

M: Oh, there is something else that you should know. A day or two afterwards, you should send her a thank?you card to thank her for the meal and her kindness.

W: Ah, thanks for telling me.

(Text 9)

W: David, did you spend your summer vacation in China or Korea?

M: I had decided to go to either China or Korea. But Jenny wanted to go to England, so we went there instead.

W: Did you have fun there?

M: Yes. London is a great city. But it rained too much while we were there. We had to take an umbrella every time we went out.

W: That’s too bad. Did you have anything funny happen during your visit?

M: Yes. Before we went to England, we were told that English people hardly ever shake hands. So when we met some English friends at the station, we kept our hands behind our backs.

W: Well, why was that funny?

M: What made it funny was that they had heard that we German people shake hands as often as possible, so they put their hands in front and got ready to shake hands with us. That made all of us laugh.

(Text 10)

Once upon a time, there lived a bad king. All the people in the country hated him. The king liked hunting. One day in spring he went hunting with his men. Suddenly, he saw a deer and rode so fast after it that he left his men far behind him. Deep in the forest, he suddenly saw two tigers staring at him. Realizing he had few arrows, he shouted for help. Two hunters were nearby. They ran over and killed the tigers. Then they realized that the man whom they had saved was the king. The king said to the hunters, “You have saved my life. Ask for anything, and I will give it to you.” One of the hunters said, “My wife is ill. Please give me some gold so I can send for a good doctor.” The king promised to do so. Then he spoke to the younger hunter, “And what can I do for you, young man?” The young man thought for a few minutes and then answered, “Don’t tell anybody that we saved you.”

W: But I read that he was not considered a very valuable player at one time, and that he was even fired several times.

W: In the article, the writer compares Lin Shuhao to Yao Ming. What do you think of that comparison?

M: I think the two players share nothing in common except their skin color.

W: I agree. Lin is a total American. No one would ever compare Yao to Kobe.

(Text 10)

An old lady and her husband lived on the second floor, and Daniel’s family lived in the apartment above theirs. Daniel’s mother and the old lady were good friends. Sadly, though, the old lady died last month, and her husband could not live alone, so he had his grandson move in to live with him.

The grandson has become a problem to all the neighbors, especially to Daniel’s family. The walls are thin and he is too noisy. Daniel is used to a peaceful and quiet neighborhood, but the young man likes to listen to the radio late at night. Sometimes he has friends over to visit and they make a lot of noise. That is too much for Daniel’s family.

Daniel’s mother once asked the old man politely if he was able to sleep well at night, but probably he didn’t understand. Even if he did and spoke to his grandson, the young man would not listen, so things would not change at all.
