Water taps made by some local companies were found to contain excessive level of lead and chromium that could affect the nervous and reproductive systems and lead to vomiting and abdominal pain, the city's quality watchdog said yesterday.

A total of 21 batches of faucets out of 68 checked by the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau failed quality tests and most of them were produced by Shanghai companies. All of them were sold in the city.

A group of faucets made by Primy Co, a Zhuhai-based high-end kitchen and bath appliance company, and sold at Shanghai Qixu Construction Material Market were found to contain excessive level of chromium when the products were dipped in water for testing. The bureau termed it as having "serious quality problems."

Six batches of water tap products were found to have excessive lead. The substandard products were sold at the Tianshan and Wuzhong outlets of HomeMart. The brands included Waigang, Roddex, and Shengjie.

Other products failed corrosion resistance and screw thread quality tests.
