(1)人文意境上， “evanescent”除了表达“short”(短暂)的事实外，烘托一种渺茫飘逝的感觉，fade away or disappear into emptiness，根据就是其第一词根 v?nus → vanish, 以及第二词根 esc → becoming. → Life(生命)will become insubstantial, like smoke or vapor → 恰似“……人生几何？譬如朝露，去日苦多……”那种意境，和Art的藏之深山、传之后世的千秋功业相对比，更加衬出内在的意蕴， 落差的鲜明。 (2)音韵节奏上，Art is long, life is evanescent音节抑扬顿挫，音步高低错落，朗朗上口，一诵三唱，透露出诗歌节奏和呼吸之间的秘密。声音，毕竟是语言的外壳，用好了，独有魅力。 这句的两种英译，古典的与后人的，各有千秋。The variety of translation just serves to adorn and light up the subject under discussion. 多元表达，横生妙趣。 这句的汉译，也是五彩纷呈：“艺术千秋，人生朝露”；“生命短暂，艺术永恒”；“生也有涯艺无涯”；等等。但译者往往忽略了两千多年前拉丁文中的art，其本意是“技艺”，而非现代人所理解的“艺术”。 例二：【E-4, Tip】 一提error(名词)，to err(动词)，必然联想起蒲柏(Alexander Pope，1688—1744)的传世隽语： To err is human, to forgive, divine. 人生在世，孰能无过？心存恕道， 超凡入圣。 亚历山大·蒲柏这一名句用的是英雄双韵体(heroic couplet)。这一英国古典诗体由十音节双韵诗体演化而来，每行五个音步，每个音步有两个音节，第一个是轻音，第二个是重音。句式均衡、整齐、准确、简洁、考究。 现代的cynicism，岿成思潮主流，语言形式不尚这种格律，但出于谑趣，也偶见于时文。 In the election of a wife, as in a project of war, to err but once is to be undone forever。 选择妻子也像策划战争，一着失误，终身之恨。 |
