The National Health and Family Planning Commission has partnered with nutrition improvement civil societies to launch a "fruit and vegetable day", in a bid to raise public awareness of good health. Wu Liangyou, a division director of the commission's disease prevention and control department, said the latest initiative is part of a project sponsored by the commission to disseminate health knowledge among the public. "Insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables is listed by the World Health Organization as one of the 10 major risk factors for health and ample intake could save about 1.7 million lives worldwide," he said. Yang Yuexin, director-general of the Chinese Nutrition Society, said children, in particular, should eat more fruits and vegetables to avoid becoming overweight or obese. "A healthy diet formed in childhood will bring lifelong health benefits for children," she said, citing a trend in which Chinese children have been eating more meat in the past decade. She suggested children eat 300 grams of vegetables and at least 200 grams of fruit each day. Related News
