我们中国人通常都很忌讳说“死”这个字，不同时期对“死”也有不同的说法。现在我们会说一个人“离开了我们”，“去世了”、“走了”等。
英文中除了用die这个比较直接的说法表示“死”以外，其实也有不少委婉的表达方式，比如pass away、pass on、depart、expire、perish等，这里的perish多指非正常死亡，比如perish in battle在战争中死亡。

在句首说Unfortunately或是I'm afraid，提醒听者接下来是反对或负面的意见。
用
否定句型代替否定的字眼，这样听起来还有一些正面的感觉。像是not very happy取代unhappy、not completely
satisfied代替dissatisfied、not quite correct取代wrong。还有常听到的not very
good取代bad、not completely true代替false。
说We understood而不是说You said，表示是自己的了解，有可能会错意了，而不是质问对方。
使用seem (似乎)表示不确定和客气的语气。
以前在课本当中我们所学到的用”May I“来表示礼貌的问句，在英国反而非常少听到，大家都是说Can I...。当然，大家还是听的懂”May I“的意思，可能使会觉得太过有礼貌，好像是皇室贵族才这么说话的。
