勒内·弗朗索瓦·吉兰·马格里特 René Fran?ois Ghislain Magritte 1898年11月21日－1967年8月15日，享年69岁。天蝎座。比利时的超现实主义画家，画风带有明显的符号语言，如《戴黑帽的男人》。他影响了今日许多插画风格。 ▼The Son of Man, 1964 生于埃诺省莱西纳，父亲是裁缝，母亲是女帽的销售。童年时常常搬家，10岁时就开始学画，1912年母亲投河（桑布尔河）自杀（享年42岁），原因不明。当其母亲的尸体被捞上来时，他当时在场，母亲浮尸时被衣饰覆盖著脸部在他脑海中留下深刻印象，这令他在1927年至1928年所的画的人物也是被衣布覆盖著脸孔，包括《爱人》（Les Amants），但他本人并不喜欢这个解释。1913年马格里特邂逅了他未来妻子 Georgette Berger（1922年结婚）。他青年时在布鲁塞尔的比利时皇家美术学院就学两年，1918年毕业后曾在壁纸工厂负责花纹设计。 ▼ The lovers, 1928 ▼ The lovers, 1928 1919年 开始对未来主义和奥费立体主义产生兴趣，并受到大他十岁的意大利画家基里诃的影响，开始了超现实主义的风格。 1926年 开始全职绘画，并于同年画成《迷失的骑师》(Le jockey perdu)，为第一幅超现实主义作品。并在1927年在布鲁塞尔举行首次的个人画展，但遭到大量侮辱性的批评。这次失败使他感到郁闷，于是他移居巴黎。后来他又回到布鲁塞尔，与他的弟弟成立一间公司，赚取生活收入。 ▼The lost jockey, 1926 1927年到1930年间，移居巴黎。在这期间，他认识了安德烈·布勒东（André Breton），并加入了超现实主义者的行列，大量的创造出具有神秘语意的迷人画作，同时也为许多时装海报或乐谱封面进行商业平面设计，1936年他的作品曾到美利坚合众国纽约展出，后来又在1965年现代艺术博物馆、1992年大都会艺术博物馆举行回顾展。 ▼Portrait of E.L.T. 晚年他定居在比利时布鲁塞尔。1967年8月15日因胰脏癌病逝，死后葬在苏哈比公墓（Schaerbeek Cemetery）。
马格里特是比利时最具影响力的当代艺术家，在西方现代艺术史上，他是最早关注“图与词”这一命题的。1929年12月，马格里特在《超现实主义革命》上发表的《词与图》宣言，其中综合呈现了艺术家在1920年代末超现实主义氛围的欧洲，对词图关系的多种思考。他最有代表性的超现实主义画作为《图的背叛》（The Treachery of Images）。此画将一个烟斗的图像和“这不是一只烟斗”的句子并置。语言与图像的并置构成了充满矛盾张力的游戏：图像烟斗并非真烟斗，是一张画；而“这不是一只烟斗”的描述则与画面本身形成悖论。语言学转向是哲学领域在20世纪发生的重大变化。马格里特则是将语言带入造型艺术领域的关键人物。 如果美术史的核心问题是研究视觉图像，那么“词与图”的问题重点就是视觉再现与语言的关系问题。 ——W.J.T.米切尔 书写和图形互相拆解对方，揭穿了对方的虚假性，词与物之间的对应关系或相似关系被消解掉了，整体瓦解了。 ▼The treachery of images (This is not a pipe), 1948 ▼The treachery of images (This is not a pipe), 1966 ▼The two mysteries, 1966
