The OICB was first compiled and published on August 26, 2006. The present site was launched in late 2011.

Holmes Welch and the Study of Buddhism
in Twentieth-Century China


A multi-year collaborative research project that will celebrate and update the seminal work of Holmes H. Welch (1924-1981)
Reconstructing Buddhism in Modern China

Daijō Tokiwa, Shina Bukkyō shiseki tōsaki (Tokyo: Ryuginsha, 1942[1938]).

This project, supported by an Early Career Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust, will examine how the reconstruction of Buddhist sacred spaces in modern China helped initiate a transformation of religious culture and the development of a modern religiosity.
