今天播放的是凯迪克获奖绘本中收听率最高的《石头汤》，作者是马西娅·布朗。这本书是公认的世界经典图画书，美国纽约图书馆推荐“每个人都应该知道的100本图画书”之一。故事讲述了三个饥饿的士兵如何巧妙地诱使村民用石头来煮汤。这些村民长年在艰难岁月中煎熬，心肠变得坚硬，不愿接纳任何人。但后来村民们发现他们不自觉地付出了很多，而获得的回报则更多。

三个士兵疲惫地走在一条陌生的乡村道路上。他们是在打完仗返家的途中。他们又累又饿,事实上,他们已经两天什么东西也没吃了。突然,他们看到前方一个村子的灯光。
Three soldiers trudged down a road in a strange country. They were on their way home from the wars. Besides being tired, they were hungry. In fact, they had eaten nothing for two days. Suddenly, ahead of them they saw the lights of a village.
那个地方的农民很不喜欢陌生人,一听说有三个士兵正走在前往村里的路上,便赶忙把食物藏起来。整个村子的情况都如此,没有一个农民肯拿出一点食物。
Now the peasants of that place feared strangers. When they heard that three soldiers were coming down the road, they talked among themselves.So it went all through the village. Not a peasant had any food to give away.
三个士兵聚在一起商量起来。然后一个士兵高声喊道:“我们向你们讨吃的,可是你们没有吃的。那么我们只得做石头汤了。”村民们瞪大了眼睛。石头汤?这倒要瞧瞧看。
Then the first soldier called out, “We have asked you for food and you have no food. Well then, we’ll have to make stone soup.”The peasants stared.Stone soup? That would be something to know about.

村民们看着士兵们把石头扔进锅里,眼睛都睁圆了。
The peasants’ eyes grew round as they watched the soldiers drop the stones into the pot.
“要是再有一点牛肉和几个土豆,这道汤就好得足以上富人的餐桌了。”农民仔细想了想。他们想起了那些土豆和挂在地窖里的牛肉,于是跑回去取来了。
“If we only had a bit of beef and a few potatoes, this soup would be good enough for a rich man’s table”The peasants thought that over. They remembered their potatoes and the sides of beef hanging in the cellars. They ran to fetch them.
农民们从阁楼里拿来大麦,又从井里弄上来牛奶。他们瞪大眼睛看着士兵们把大麦和牛奶倒进热气腾腾的肉汤里搅拌。汤终于做好了。
The peasants brought their barley from the lofts, they brought their milk from the wells. The soldiers stirred the barley and milk into the steaming broth while the peasants stared.

村里从来没有过这样的宴席。那些农民从来没有尝过这样的汤——而且竟然是石头做的!大家吃啊,喝啊,然后跳起舞来。他们唱歌、跳舞,一直到深夜。
Never had there been such a feast. Never had the peasants tasted such soup. And fancy, made from stones!They ate and drank and ate and drank. And after that they danced.They danced and sang far into the night.
