This is the story about sharing. It’s good to share.

(to audience:)

Are you selfish? Or do you share things?

(Pause)

What things do you share?

 (Take suggestions from the audience.)

Well,in this story you will see some people who don’t know how to share! Welcome to our assembly. It’s called “Stone Soup Tonight!”.

Narrator (Michael):

Once upon a time, long ago, four soldiers were trudging down the road in a distant country.

(Enter 4 soldiers, marching to a drum beat.)

They were on their way home from the wars, feeling hungry and tired.

Sarah:

HowI would like a good dinner tonight, : I’m so hungry my tummy is rumbling. And my feet hurt.

Hanson:

Me too. And I am fed up of sleeping in a dark wet field like a tramp. I long to sleep in a fine feather bed again!

Sarah:

I haven’t eaten for two days. And all my clothes are just rags!

Hanson:

I’m hungry and dirty and…

(feeling chin)

… I need a shave as well. Let’s go to that village and ask for help!

Narrator(Michael):

On they marched until they came to a village. The people in the village had seen them coming, and were scared of soldiers. They even hid all their food, thinking that the soldiers might steal it. The people who lived in this village were very very greedy and selfish. They had no idea about sharing things. The soldiers knocked at a door of a house to ask for food.

Sarah:

(Knocks on door. Bobbie and Amy open door)

Good evening to you. Please could you spare a little supper for four poor hungry soldiers?

Hanson:

And a place to sleep.

Bobbie:

Go away. We have no food to spare.

Aimee:

And you can’t sleep here. No room! Go away!

Bobbie:

Go, don’t have anything for you in this town.

Aimee:

Go somewhere else, where they can help you!

Jason:

Here comes 2 soldiers.  They are always hungry, but we don’t have enough food for them!!!

Narrator(Jason):

The soldiers stopped at the second house.

Hanson:

We have had no food for 3 days.

Michael:

It has been a poor season.  We have no food.

From across Bobbie shouts:

Bobbie:

And no Beds!!!

Narrator(Aimee):

They received the same answer from each house in the village. The villagers did not know how to share.

Sarah:

These selfish greedy people will never share their food with us! We will starve!

Hanson:

Don’t worry, my friend! I know a way they will share their food.

Narrator(Bobbie):

By now, quite a crowd had gathered.

(Enter other peasants andchildren)

The soldiers asked for a big iron pot.

(Peasants bring a pot)

They filled it with water and lit a fire underneath.

Aimee:

What are you doing?

Hanson:

We are making a pot of delicious stone soup. Get me some big stones please?

(Children do as asked, and drop them into the pot.)

Sarah:

(stirring and tasting soup)

It’s very good stone soup. But it needs a little salt and pepper.

Aimee:

I’ll get some!

(Runs off, returns with salt and pepper, sprinkles some in thepot.)

Sarah:

(stirring and tasting soup)

Nearly ready! But a few carrots would make it taste so much better.

Michael:

I think I can spare a few carrots.

(Gets them, puts them in the pot)

Sarah:

 (stirring and tasting soup)

Almost finish. Some cabbage will make it even better!!!!

Bobbie:

I think I could find a cabbage somewhere.

Hanson:

If we only had a bit of more meat !!!

Everyone:

The peasants thought that over. They remembered their potatoes and the sides of beef hanging in the cellars. They ran to fetch them.

At last the soup was ready.

Hanson:

All of you shall taste.

Sarah:

But first a table must be set.

Narrator (Michael):

Great tables were placed in the square. And all around were lighted torches.

Such a soup! How good it smelled! Truly fit for a king.

Bobbie:

Wouldn’t such a soup need bread?

Jason:

And dessert!!!

Narrator (Aimee) :

Never had there been such a feast. Never had the peasants tasted such soup. And fancy, made from stones!

In the morning, the whole village gathered in the square to give them a send-off.

Bobbie:

Many thanks for what you have taught us,

We shall never go hungry, now that we know how to make soup from stones.”
