A Short Song Ballad

Before wine, sing a song;

How long is life, how long?

It seems like morning dew

With bygones gone with woe.

O sing loud and sing free,

And yet my cause frets me.

What can kill sorrow mine?

Nothing but Dukang Wine.

Blue, blue the scholar gown

Seek, seek I up and down.

In your esteem I bow

And have chanted till now.

The deer each to each bleat;

Afield they wormwood eat.

I have good guests today;

The lute and flute we play.

Fair, fair the moon does shine;

Could I have it? I pine!

My heart's laden with care,

Which seems to stay for e'er.

Through the field lies the lane;

It's for you, not in vain

We talk throughout repast;

Rememb'ring your grace past.

The moon's bright and stars few;

Fly south magpie and crow.

Thrice they go round the birch,

But on which bough to perch?

Let mounts be high and steep

And the seas broad and deep.

O our sage Prince of Zhou,

To your side all would go.

英译二:许渊冲

A Short Song

We should sing before wine.

For how long can life last?

Like dew on morning fine,

So many days have passed.

How can we be unbound

By grief which weighs us down?

Grief can only be drowned

In wine of good renown.

Talents with collars blue,

For you I pine away;

So much I long for you,

My heart aches night and day.

How gaily call the deer

While grazing in the shade!

When I have talents here,

Let lute and lyre be played!

Bright as the moon on high,

How can I bring it down?

Grief from within comes nigh;

Ceaselessly it flows on.

Across the fields and lanes,

You are kind to come here.

Talking of far-off plains,

You cherish friendship dear.

The moon's bright and stars nice,

The crows in southward flight

They circle the trees thrice;

There's no branch to alight.

With crags high mountain rise;

With water the sea's deep.

With the help of the wise,

An ordered world we'll keep.

A Song

Wine before us, sing a song.

How long does life last?

It is like the morning dew;

Sad so many days have past.

Sing hey, sing ho!

Deep within my heart I pine.

Nothing can dispel my woe,

Save Du Kang, the god of wine.

Blue, blue the scholar's robe;

Long, long for him I ache.

Preoccupied with you, my lord,

Heavy thoughts for your sake.

To each other cry the deer,

Nibbling grass upon the plain.

When a good friend visits me,

We'll play the lyre once again.

In the sky, the moon is bright;

Yet I can reach it never.

In my heart such sorrow dwells;

Remaining with me ever.

In the fields, our paths crossed;

Your visit was so kind.

Together after our long parting,

Your favours come to mind.

Clear the moon, few the stars;

The crows in southward flight.

Circling three times round the tree,

No branch where to alight.

What if the mountain is high,

Or how deep the sea?

When the Duke of Zhou greeted a guest,

In his service all wished to be.

英译四:电影《赤壁》

I lift my drink and sing a song,

for who knows if life is short or long?

Man's life is but the morning dew,

past days many, future ones few.

The melancholy my heart begets,

comes from cares I cannot forget.;

What can unravel these woes of mine?

I know but one drink – Du Kang Wine.

Disciples dress in blue,

my heart worries for you.

You are the cause,

of this song without pause.

Across the bank a deer bleats,

in the wild where it eats.

Honored my guests I salute,

strike the harp! Play the flute!

Bright is the moon's spark,

when can I pick it apart?

Thoughts of you from deep inside,

cannot settle, cannot subside.

Friends drop by via a country road,

the respect they pay really show.

A long due reunion we fest,

sharing past stories we possessed.

Stars around the moons are few,

southward the crows flew.

Flying with no rest,

where shall they nest?

No mountain too steep,

no ocean too deep.

Sage pauses [from meals] when guests call,

so at his feet the empire does fall!

英译五

A short Song

I drink and sing of our short life:

It’s just like dew in the morning,

And there’s few days left for me,

What a difficult way I passed!

Facing the unusual human life,

I am full of sorrowful thoughts;

My heavy heart could be drown

In wine made of the best master.

Thinking of your figures,

I long for you, my friends.

You haunt my soul day and night,

So far these poems learnt by heart.

“Like deers grazing in lawn,

They cry happy and merry;

I meet my good guests

With music and poems”

The bright moon makes me sick for you,

And how could I get you to work with me?

My sorrows are so heavy,

I could not get rid of them.

Our friendship isn’t never valued so dear.

A bosom friend makes a distant land near.

Welcome to me, friends wise and dear!

Hurry up, come from a thousound miles afar.

What a good night with us

when the moon is so bright!

What a pity tonight with the crows

Flying south for a branch to sit.

Mountains higher, the better,

Oceans deeper, the better;

Friends the more, the better,

I'll be with you like Duke Zhou.
