Key/significant points or ideas: - Nichols offers 4 modes he states represent the dominant organizational patterns around which most texts are structured: expository, observational, interactive and reflexive - He describes how these modes have periods or eras of predominance, but that they are not necessarily on found in one particular era. - The reading outlines how these modes emerged (largely in reaction to earlier modes—you might include some of this) - Each mode posses different ethical questions for the practitioner - He outlines the characteristics of the EXPOSITORY MODE: o addresses viewer directly—commentary directed at the viewer o advances an argument—frequently through the use of ‘voice-of-god’ commentary o emphasizes the impression of objectivity (preferred meaning) o establish and maintain rhetorical continuity thorough the editing o emphasizes impression of objectivity o etcetera ….
