如果一个人谈了两个朋友，我们通常会说他“脚踏两条船”。其实这句中文特别形象生动，因为我们会自然联想到踩着两条船，船会晃动得更加剧烈，忽然倾覆，坐船人只身沉入深水之中。

不过，英文里面也有一个对应的词：two-time，意思是同时和2个人交往。

It’s high “time” we looked at this important word. Time is the one thing we all have in common, we only have so much of it before our time is up. Have a look at some ways we can use this useful everyday word.

The right TIME for something

1. two-time（脚踏两条船）
Date with more than one person at the same time: "She ought to be careful. She's two-timing Jack with Bill and Jack is a very jealous person…"

2. just in time（分秒不差）
"They arrived just in time for the wedding."

3. in the nick of time（紧要关头）
without a second to spare: "We got here in the nick of time. Look at all that rain!"

4. high time（正是时候）
the right time: "It's high time you got a job!" (Note: use the past simple after "high time")

5. not before time（早该发生）
"He's finally got a job. Not before time, I might add!"

6. it's about time（是时候了）
"It's about time you found your own place to live." (Use the past simple after "it's about time")

7. not the time / hardly the time（不是时候）
an inappropriate time for something: "It's not the time to ask me for a pay rise.!

8. lose track of time（对时间不知不觉）
forget about the time: "She was so engrossed in her book she lost all track of time."

9. call time on（终止）
bring an end to something: "The government are calling time on internet spammers."

10. take time out（暂缓）
have a pause from something: "He needs to take some time out from his work."

11. keep time（时间走得准）
show the right time: "My watch doesn't keep good time."

12. have the time of your life（享受人生中最快乐的时光）
have a great time: "She's having the time of her life at University. She loves it!"

13. before your time（在你出生/来到之前）
before a person lived or worked in a place: "There used to be a post office here. That was before your time, of course."

14. time and a half（1.5倍，常指加班工资）
when a worker is paid extra for working overtime: "We get time and a half if we work on Saturdays."

15. overtime（加班费）
money paid for working extra hours: "The firm are cutting back on overtime."

16. time share（分时共享，度假购房的一种方式）
a holiday home bought by more than one person, where each "owner" has a certain period of the year they can use it: "Time share apartments are cheap at the moment."
