It’s human nature to avoid the things you are not familiar with, not good at, or that may bring too much pressure on you. But it’s the very things that help you overcome your weaknesses and prompt you to a new level in life. Twelve years ago, the Dean of my Department persuaded me to have a demonstration lecture on behalf of our college, with the presence of probably 60 teachers from other schools. Deep inside, I didn’t want to do it because of the following reasons. I had less than one year’s teaching experience, though teaching is my dream job. Many experienced teachers were not willing to do it. They had qualifications and professional titles. But just because of what they had, most of them worried that if they didn’t do a good job, it would bring embarrassment to the college and themselves, too. Finally, I promised to undertake the task after plenty of inner struggles. You may ask me why. It’s simple. Nadia Comaneci has a quote: “I don't run away from a challenge because I am afraid. Instead, I run towards it because the only way to escape fear is to trample it beneath your foot.” You may have expected that I would do a good job. You’re right. Almost all the teachers who attended the lecture spoke highly of me of my teaching. That’s a magical moment. Ever after, I have been making progress all the time. And every time I face a challenge or something like that, I remind myself of the tough but rewarding one a decade ago. The further you get away from yourself, the more challenging it is because you are not in your comfort zone. But never give up easily because the roughest roads often lead to the top.
