Erica RuzicManager of PepsiCo China Nutrition's Program Management Office Why did you take part in White Collar Boxing?I was looking for a challenge unrelated to my job and found Golden Gloves around CNY of 2015. There’s a thriving fitness community in Shanghai and some workout buddies have become my closest friends. The day before training started for December’s Shanghai Fight Night, Tyler and I met each other in the gym. We looked at each other and thought, we could fight. Stepping into the ring has subsequently been this subconscious goal in my head. What were the other sports you have done?I’ve always had a lot of energy – my first memories of sports are of early morning runs with my dad, in Sydney. Growing up, I danced, played soccer and flirted with running track. It’s no secret I’ve never been very good at any one of these – I’m naturally uncoordinated. My first real exposure to martial arts was in 2012 when I spent four weeks at the Shaolin temple studying Kungfu – although Baj, Chris and Ricky [GG coaches] will complain I couldn’t throw a proper punch when I started boxing. Since that time, I’ve had this idea that I could be a fighter. What is the toughest part of training? The training is tough, but the hardest part is the scheduling, finding time to rest. When every moment is scheduled, you need to make sure that you’re mentally and physically present. The switch from work to boxing to work to sleep is grueling. You need to be strict with yourself. Why did you take part in White Collar Boxing?I have always loved sports and fitness. The best combination for me is to learn a skill whilst getting fit. I began boxing training at Golden Gloves straight after Brawl on the Bund in July of this year. Since then, I have been training there about three times a week. It’s a great place to train with experienced coaches and friendly clientele. I decided that I wanted a goal to work towards and when the White Collar Boxing came up this time, I was up for the challenge! What is the toughest part of training?Putting the theory that you learn in training into practice in the ring is a huge challenge in boxing. In practical terms, whether it be a combination or punches, or particular foot movement, you need to practise each drill hundreds of times in shadow boxing in order to be able to apply it properly in the ring. Once you find what works for you, then you can try to incorporate it into your style. |
