合谷，民间称作虎口，穴在两手指骨之间开阖之处，指骨相汇为合，指骨相分为谷，谷乃两山之间的缝隙，脉气所过犹如山谷中的清泉。
合谷乃大肠经原穴，是脏腑元气经过留止的位置，元气也是维持人体正常生命活动的元素之一，元气充沛则脏腑功能旺盛，也就更加健康！而原穴通过与三焦及肾气的相交汇贯通，对人的身体至关重要，正所谓人活一口气，这气除了指呼吸，更多的是指元气，所以所谓的十二原穴大家都要重视。
合谷大肠之原，可以清泻阳明，由于是原穴，对本经其他穴位而言调节消化道的功能相对最强。
合谷也是清热解表疏风开窍的首选用穴之一，由于和肺经是表里经，可疏解上焦，和其他疏风解表之穴配伍可解一身之表。
开窍安神，与太冲相配称为开四关，都为手足之要冲，元气之节点，有定乾坤之功！和其他定神熄风的穴位相配可平肝潜阳，镇痛安神。
