Potassium is almost always deficient in mature aquaponic systemsunless it is supplemented. Plants, and especially flowering and fruitingplants, consume potassium at rates significantly higher than rates of input.This basically means that in order to have healthy plants, you’ll have toartificially bump up the amount of potassium in your system. Supplementing Potassium in Your System

You can do this one of two ways- by adding potassium to your systemsolution, or by applying it foliarly (spraying it on the plant leaves). Addingpotassium to your solution is often the easiest way to supplement potassium,but it can also be problematic.  This is because the amount of potassiumyou add to your system isn’t always what is available to your plants. Potassium is being consumed by other organisms in the system and is oftenreacting or interacting with other elements in ways that we don’t expect. Thismeans that our plants can show potassium deficiency symptoms, even if there istechnically plenty of potassium in the system.

你能通过两种方法里的一种来补钾——向系统的水里直接加入钾或喷施叶面钾肥。前者通常是最简单的补钾方法,但也可能引发问题,因为加到系统里的钾往往不能全部被植物利用。一部分钾会被系统里的其他有机物消耗掉,而且钾经常会以我们不期望的形式与其他元素起化学反应或相互作用。这也就意味着即使从技术上讲系统里有充足的钾,植物仍然有可能出现缺钾症状。

Potassium has a complicated relationship with other elements- namelyCalcium and Magnesium (both very important nutrients in their own right!).
钾和其他元素有着说不清道不明的复杂关系——它们就是钙和镁(两者都是非常重要的营养元素!)。

Calcium is the primary nutrient that complicates potassium in manysystems.  It is very common in aquaponic systems to use calcium carbonate to“buffer” pH, and even where it isn’t common, there are many areas where wateris hard with calcium based carbonates.  This means that calcium isentering the system in the form of fish feed as well as calcium carbonate.While calcium can be deficient in many systems, there are a few where it isabundant to the point that it impacts potassium availability. This means thatwhen there is lots of calcium present, it can reduce a plants ability to takeup enough potassium, leading to deficiencies.  The same is also true ofmagnesium, but to a lesser extent.

在很多系统中,钙是让钾元素变得复杂的主要原因。在鱼菜共生系统里,碳酸钙普遍被用作pH的调节剂,就算没有这么做,很多地区的水也因碳酸钙而变得很硬。这就是说钙会以鱼食和碳酸钙的形式进入系统。虽然有些系统会缺钙,但还是有很多时候钙会多到影响钾的可吸收性。所以如果系统里有太多的钙,植物能吸收的钾元素就会降低,进而引发缺素症状。对于镁来说也是同样的道理,只不过程度轻一些。

So, it is important to maintain a balance between these threecontenders if you wish to supplement potassium effectively.  We must makesure that we are not supplementing one at the expense of the others. There are two ways to accomplishthis:

  • Balancing inputs     (maintaining a balance between Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium additions     based on your system’s needs)
  • Applying one, or all of     these nutrients foliarly (essentially bypassing much of the issues with     trying to balance nutrients in solution).



1.      平衡好输入(根据系统的需求添加钾、钙、镁,维持好它们之间的平衡)
2.      通过叶面肥的形式补充它们中的一个或全部(可以避免很多在尝试平衡水中营养元素时会出现的问题)
