On October 2, 1891, Charles Brown and Walter Boveri created a start-up named BBC, in Baden, Switzerland, to tap the opportunities of a promising new technology – electricity. It was the groundwork for a global power and automation company, now known as ABB, that has put technical innovation at the heart of its business.

ABB, through its predecessor BBC, has a 125 year unbroken record of engineering excellence in Switzerland. Groundbreaking achievements made by ABB have shaped the world today, from gas-insulated switchgear to turbochargers. To celebrate its 125th anniversary, ABB launched a trip with the theme of technology and innovation to show it deploys its resources to improve technologies in power, transportation, manufacturing and infrastructure to help clients save operational costs and power to prove efficiency and environmental impact.

On the morning of September 30 in Geneva, Switzerland, a bus with the logo of TOSA is approaching with 18 reporters from China onboard. Their e-bus journey in the city is a part of ABB’s 125-year anniversary trip that features technological innovation.

Indeed, first impression matters the most, just looks like a regular trolleybus, except when you look on the roof.

With the world’s fastest flash-charging connection technology it takes less than 1 second to connect the bus to the charging point. The onboard batteries can then be charged in 15 seconds with a 600-kilowatt boost of power at the bus stop.

There is no doubt that precise timing is one big advantage in Switzerland where every second counts.

TOSA (Trolleybus Optimisation System Alimentation) is a zero-carbon-emission solution as the electricity used comes entirely from clean hydro power. The first articulated bus (18m75 length) for 133 passengers ran under real-life operating conditions from May 2013 to end 2014 on a route from Geneva’s airport (terminus) to the nearby Palexpo exhibition centre (flash-charging station). ABB delivers and deploys 13 flash-charging stations along the bus route, as well as three terminal and four depot feeding stations.

Nowadays, people’s demand on public transportation no longer focus on sending them from one site to another site. Silence, flexibility and zero-emissions, as well as lowering operational cost, are increasingly important to urban mass transportation systems.

Instead of the usual trolley poles to overhead lines, this e-bus has a controlled moving arm that connects, in less than a second, to an overhead receptacle integrated into the bus shelter. The flash-charging technology feeds the onboard batteries for 15 seconds as passengers are getting on and off the bus. The bus wastes no time and is ready to leave. The TOSA e-buses can help save as much as 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year, when compared with existing diesel buses.
