最难搞懂意思的25个词！你懂几个？

前几天，英大在外国网站逛的时候，看到这么一句话，不知道该怎么翻译，大家也一起来试试：

Because of the agency's oversight, the corporation's behavior was sanctioned.

整个句子意思是“政府机构严查公司，发现了公司的一些违法行为并给予了处罚。”还是“由于政府机构大意，他们疏忽了公司的不当行为。”呢？

这个“oversight”的词，让我困惑了。到底是“严查”还是“疏忽”的意思？

英大查了字典才知道，既有“严查”，又有“疏忽”的意思。

像“oversight”这种词，单词本身的2个意思是截然相反的，就是反义同形词。我们很容易受到这种词的迷惑，一定要根据上下文来理解，不然就会想岔了

Oversight

1.监察，监管。

The bank will need to be tougher in its neglected regulatory oversight capacity.

美联储需要加强其被忽视的监管监督能力。

2.忽视，忽略。

The mistake was the result of an oversight.

这个错误是因疏忽而产生的。

oversight是两个动词oversee和overlook的名词形式。

oversee含义是“监督，监察，监管”；overlook是“忽视，忽略”的意思，含义与oversee正相反。

Sanction

1.（尤指正式或法律认可的）批准，许可。

Analysts said the deal faced major hurdles in getting official sanction.

分析人士说，这桩交易在获得官方批准方面面临重大障碍。

2.（对违反法律或规定者进行的）惩罚，处罚。

The ultimate sanction will be the closure of the restaurant.

最严厉的处罚将是关闭这家餐馆。

Left

1.离开，离去。

They spent the inside of a week there and left on Sunday.

在那里他们住了不到一星期，星期日就离开了。

2.留下的，剩下的。

They left everything at home for her to manage and she had no money.

Dust

dust名词作动词的时候，依语境翻译成“添加”或者“去除”。要根据语境去判别它的意思是“在…上撒（粉末）”还是“给…除尘”。

常用短语：

1.leave sb in the dust

把某人远远抛在后面；使望尘莫及

2.let the dust settle\wait for the dust to settle

待形势明朗；待情况清楚

Seed

和dust一样，当seed名词作动词的时候，既有“播种”，也有“去种”的意思，要根据上下文来理解。

1.seed the lawn：播种

2.seed a tomato：给番茄去籽

Trim

trim最早用作动词，有“添加”或者“消减”两个含义。

1.消除 ~ sth (off sth).~ sth (off/away)

Use scissors to trim hair around the ears and back of the neck into a straight line.

用剪刀将耳朵和脖子后面的头发剪成直线。

2.添加，装饰 ~ sth (with sth)

Cleave

1.劈开；（使）裂开；（使）分开。

We shadow the sea with our sails, and reelingly cleave the brine.

将帆影撒在海面上，摇摇摆摆地分开了海水。

2.黏附，附着。

To love one maiden,cleave to her, and worshipherbyyearsofgoldendeeds.

去爱一个姑娘，忠于她，用你长久的行动使她崇拜。

Resign

1.辞职，退出。

You think I should ask him for a leave of absence or resign?

你说向他请假还是辞职？

2.和sign的衍生词resign“续约”同形，但是发音不同。

Fast

1.快地，迅速地。

例如：running fast，“跑得快”。

2.固定地，不动地。

例如：holding fast，“紧紧地握住”。

Off

1.关闭。常用短语：tune off

The alarm went off.

闹钟关掉了。

2.激活。

The alarm went off.

闹钟响了。

Weather

1.平安度过（困境），经受住。

The company weathered the recession.

公司在经济大萧条中挺住了。

2.（使）因风吹日晒而褪色，（使）受到风雨侵蚀，（使）风化。

The rock was weathered.

岩石被风化了。

Screen

1.放映，播出。~ sth

2.遮掩，遮蔽。~ sth/sb (from sth/sb)

His comrade screened him from the enemy in the war.

战友在战争中掩护他。

Help

1.帮助。这是我们最为熟悉的意思。

2.在“can’t help doing something中”，意为“阻止”。

Clip

1.（用夹子）夹在一起。

Her shoulder-length, ash-blond hair was fastened with a clip at the back of her neck.

她那齐肩长的、灰金发用发卡系在脖子后面。

2.分离。

1.持续，继续做某事。

2.作为法律术语，意为“暂时停止”。

Fight with

1.和...吵架。

He fought with his mother-in-law.

他和岳母吵架了。

2.和...一起作战。

It would be difficult to fight a battle with a navy bobbing about on the ocean against a shore-based fascist regime.

一支在海上漂来漂去的海军同在海岸集结法西斯政权的军队打仗，困难是无法估量的。

3.用...作为武器。
