Your First Trails for the Year of the Rooster

Planning activities for your Lunar New Year weekend? Visits to the temple aside, why not invite your friends and family along for a hike or two—using TrailWatch’s event planning function, of course. Read on to see the kai-themed trails (here, the Chinese character “雞”, which means “chicken”, is transliterated in English as kai) our editors have handpicked just for you.

But, before you start: TrailWatch is vying for a spot in Radio Television Hong Kong’s (RTHK) Community Involvement Broadcasting Service. If selected, we’ll have our own radio programme, and YOU can help make that happen! Head over to https://cibs./ and cast your vote for “Joy in the Countryside” so we can all learn about the awesomeness of hiking.

Snack on Tea Cakes at Kai Kuk Shue Ha

https://www./?t=activities&rid=10019604

Route: Luk Keng > Kai Kuk Shue Ha > Shui Cham Tsui Pai > Kuk Po > Fung Hang (and back)
Good for: Families, couples or friends who hike just to have an excuse to pig out after

Edging on the border of Hong Kong, Kai Kuk Shue Ha is accessible by the 56K minibus from Fanling. Alight at the bus terminus, and find your starting point at Luk Keng. Head in the direction of Kai Kuk Shue Ha and you’ll see a striking contrast between the two coasts—hikers trekking leisurely on one side, and high-rise developments on the other. Not long into your journey you’ll find Shui Cham Tsui Pai by a row of mangroves. If the tide is low, you can even venture into the heart of the mangroves.

Amidst a cluster of village houses built in the 60s you’ll find a stall known for its handmade Chinese tea cakes. Their offerings come in both sweet and savoury flavours. We recommend the glutinous rice tea cake with skunk vine: it has a pillowy, mochi-like texture, and while it is sweet, it’s far from overpowering. A short path in front of the stall will lead you to the pier, or you could take the same route back to Luk Keng. Alternatively, you could head for So Lo Pun, or Lai Chi Wo.

Hike Up Kai Kong Shan for a View of the Sai Kung Peninsula

https://www./?t=activities&rid=10019642

Route: Pak Tam Au > Ngau Yee Shek Shan > Cheung Sheung > Wa Mei Shan > Kai Kong Shan > Shui Long Wo
Good for: Reasonably experienced folks who love a good challenge and can trek mid to long distances
*This route is mostly dirt road, so it’s not ideal for rainy days.

Situated along Stage 3 of the MacLehose Trail, Kai Kong Shan has an elevation of 399m, which isn’t a particularly impressive height—but—to get there, you’ll have to journey through hilly terrain, so make sure you bring lots of water with you.

Take KMB bus 94 or 96R from Pak Tam Au. Your journey starts with a flight of exposed stairs leading uphill. Keep going and you’ll find yourself trekking along the undulating ridges of the Sai Kung mountains. Bathroom facilities and stalls await at Cheung Sheung.

Continue with your journey after a quick break: if you’re up for it, pass through the midslope of Lui Ta Shek and keep trekking until you reach its peak, or head downwards to find the starting point of Kai Kung Shan—a wide flight of steps. Climb to the top and feast your eyes on the Three Fathoms Cove. Make your descent on to Shui Long Wo, where you can take public transport back to Sai Kung Town, knowing that you’ve gotten your effort’s worth out of the trail with its majestic views.
