Feeling Down? Let's Talk

Depression is a major problem worldwide. WHO newly released report Depression and Other Common Mental Disorders: Global Health Estimates shows that more than 300 million people suffer from depression globally. As societies have developed, people are under more and more pressure. Dr. Bernhard Schwartl?nder, the WHO Representative went on the TV show “Informal talk” to discuss depression and encourage more people to talk about it with loved ones.

There were some personal revelations during the discussion.  Did you know the sunny boy Xiaobei suffered from depression? Yoyo, who managed a perfect score on mental health test, suffered from depression for one year. Depression can affect anyone, including people around you, if you pay enough attention.

During the show, Xiaobei and Yoyo both mentioned that, while dealing with depression, they found it helpful to talk with someone. Opening up about how you are doing, and talking to someone you trust about your feelings are important. Fighting depression with people is always better than fighting depression alone.

“Depression is an illness, not a sign of weakness,” Dr. Schwartl?nder emphasized. There are lots of people who suffer from depression, but are not aware that they have depression. Xiaobei pointed out that people still misunderstand depression and are insensitive, saying “You will be fine.” This only makes people feel badly about themselves. What should we do instead?

According to Dr. Schwartl?nder: “There are three simple things that we can always do.” Let’s check out what they are!

First, “Listen, take the time, go out with your friend, have a cup of coffee, and just listen to what they have to say, what your friends have to say about their experiences and try to refocus on the balance, on the most positive things, and talk about their strengths, and try to do something they are good at doing.”

Second, “Physical activity, doing sports, getting exercise can actually be a great way to release some of their pressures. So take your friend for a walk, or go out play a match of tennis, or go on a long bike ride.” It's a good way to release stress and anxiety, sweat out the negative.

And finally, if you are really concerned about a friend or loved one, Dr. Schwartl?nder says you should “help your friend to see a doctor.  Go with them to the doctor, make sure you actually show them that depression is not a weakness, that you take them seriously.  Look for the telephone number that you can use to call a support center.  All these simple things can help overcome the obstacles that keep our friends and family from seeking care and treatment.”

At the end of the show, Dr. Schwartl?nder noted that depression is a crucial public health problem, especially among young people, and the clear relationship between depression and suicide.

Don’t you think it’s time to pay more attention and take actions against depression? This year, the topic of WHO’s World Health Day is depression, with a call to action, “Let’s talk”.
