The Daffodils--William Wordsworth
I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host , of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company!
E gaze –and gazed –but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

像群星在闪烁一片晶莹;
通往远方仿佛无穷无尽;
却不如这水仙舞得轻俏;
又怎能不感到欢欣雀跃进;
感到百无聊赖心灵空漠;
多少次安慰过我的寂寞;
The poem was written by William Wordsworth before long he returened from France, where he joined some revolutionary activities in the hope of yarning for freedom. However, France revolution came to a unexpected end--a chaos of the country followed. It was imaginable that how dispressed and shocked the poet would be! He gradually recovered from the sadness with the help of his friends and sister, and this poem was written after his mood calming down.
At the beginning of the poem, the poet imagined himself as a lonely cloud that floats on high over vales and hills. The lonely and proud poet saw a crowd,A host , of golden daffodils;Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. At this time,the daffodil was no longer a plant, but a symbol embodied the soul and spirit.
The poem is romantic, and with a full-bodied symbolism. That calm and merry daffodils symbolized the poet himself, whose heart was melted into the world of daffodils. The poet found his life in the nature. The poem praised daffodils, though it also expressed his inner heart.
The poet was strongly self-expressive, that proud image over the vales and hills,that merry daffodils,that lonely sleep may be the discription of himself,may be the yarning of the poet. The poet was also extrovert, because he saw the daffodil that represented his thought. And we surely touched the heart of the poet,the daffodils turned to be the imago in the heart of him.
