Discourse

【Discourse】

Discourse is a very broad term and is difficult to define in this limited medium, but a very simple definition is “any connected piece of speaking or writing”, so it’s almost any meaningful combination of words.

Discourse has many meanings, it is not important for teaching but it appears in a lot of teaching theory books.

(See → Cohesion; Coherence)

Discourse Marker

Discourse

Words or expressions like “well”, “anyway”, “listen”, “I mean”.

They connect to the listener directly to get attention, begin an utterance or change of topic.

Many coursebooks include discourse markers but they are usually described by the more common term: linkers.

(See → Linker)

9

Ellipsis

【Discourse】

Ellipsis is a feature of spoken grammar.

Native speakers intentionally leave out words from sentences, forming what appear to be grammatically incorrect sentences, for instance, “I went to the cafe to find John, didn’t see him, waited for ages, an hour, arrived two hours later, always does that”

Ellipsis is usually taught at advanced level. It is a native speaker instinct and doesn’t follow a set of rules.

(See → Reduced Relative Clause; Spoken Grammar)
