Bizarre指奇怪或不寻常,尤其当这些词所呈现的形式意料不到,前后不一和耸人听闻而产生震惊和惊讶时:skyscrapers that were as bizarre to them as their village of tiny houses would have been to us; the flamboyant Gothic style in which the stonework of the arches and windows took on bizarre convoluted designs. Falstaff and the other grotesque cronies of the young prince; children with grotesque, cadaverous bodies, blighted by disease and malnutrition.
它可以被用于富于幻想的或梦幻的任何东西,或是看上去偏离现实常识的东西:the fantastic nightmare world of Hieronymus Bosch; a fantastic tower made of concrete, bottles, hubcaps, and cans. Weird与fantastic相似点在于都表示与普通现实的巨大反差:a weird feeling that time was standing still as the car hurtled down the cliff; weird forms of ocean life that flourish where sunlight never reaches them. 现在,它更多地指任何不寻常到令人震惊或愤怒程度的事物:the outlandish look of the four backup singers.
反义词:normal, unexceptional.
