◆half adj. & pron. 1. 如:half an hour(英)=a half hour(美)(半小时) / half a mile(英)=a half mile(美)(半英里) / half a pound(英)=a half pound(美)(半磅) (2) 与定冠词、形容词性物主代词、指示代词等词连用时,应放在这些词之前(此时也可用 half of)。如: Half (of) the fruit is bad. More than half (of) my friends are foreigners. 如:half of them, half of it 等。 2. Half (of) the apples are bad. Half (of) the apple is bad. Half of them have left. One and a half months have passed since I saw him. / A month and a half has passed since I saw him. 3. 汉语说“半小时”,英语一般用 half an hour 或 a half hour, 只是在特别准确地讲时,才说 thirty minutes; 但表示“半年”,通常用 six months, 则较少用 half a year。 4. 表示把某物分成两半,英语可用 cut sth in half或 cut sth into halves, 但一般不说 cut sth in halves [into half]。 如: It isn’t half hot today. A:Would you like to come? B:Not half. The film is not half bad. ◆hand n. & v. 1. We are short of hands. He is a new (an old, a green) hand. Many hands make light work. Can you give [lend] me a hand? He shook hands warmly with me. / He shook my hand warmly. 有时也说 shake sb by the hand。如: He came forward and shook me warmly by the hand. 注:不要按汉语字面意思将“握手”直译为 hold hands(指手搀手,尤指互相爱慕地),hold sb’s hand(给某人以手把手的指导或支持,或帮助克服困难等)。 3. Hands up, those who know the answer. Hands up and drop your arms. Put up your hand(s) if you have any questions. Please hand me the dictionary. /Please the dictionary tome. He handed her his drink. /He handed his drink to her. ◆by hand & with one’s hand(s) 1. by hand The letter was written by hand. I don’t think these shoes are made by hand. Did the letter come by hand or through the post? 2. with one’s hand(s) We work with our hands. He stroke the child with his hand. ◆hang v. 1. A full moon hung in the sky. The man was hanged for murder. His portrait (was) hung above the fireplace. There we saw a picture hanging [hung] on the wall.
