A Royal Celebration by Hillier welcomes visitors to the Great Pavilion, marking the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. To honour the true essence of all that is gardening, combined with a celebration of British royalty, the planting takes on a bridal theme, with lots of white florals. As Hillier is the UK’s largest grower of semi-mature trees, the entrance exhibit features Hillier trees on both sides.

1.5:RHS LETTERS

Designed by Lucy Hunter

Taking inspiration from a traditional cottage garden wall, the RHS letters are filled with brick slips, rambling roses, vines, perennials and grasses. The exhibit is a mixture of planting design and floristry, and uses British-grown flowers wherever possible, including sustainably-foraged foliage. The cut flowers are kept hydrated with hidden test tubes, moss and ‘eco bouquet wraps’, a new environmentally-friendly product. Look out for more of Lucy’s work as you enter the Bandstand via Sweetingham Steps.

2.1: The Embroidered Minds Epilepsy Garden

Designed by Kati Crome

Built by Conway Landscapes

Sponsored by Embroidered Minds

Embroidered Minds is a collaboration between writers, artists, doctors and historians to explore the effects of epilepsy, a neurological disorder that affected the eldest daughter of Victorian craftsman William Morris, and to raise awareness of how it remains a challenge today.

The garden represents different states of a seizure. The pre-seizure area is calm and sedate with mainly green and white planting, including Acanthus mollis, used so often in Morris designs, and Valeriana officinalis, which was one of the first epilepsy drugs. An oak bench, tiled path and foreground garden are interrupted by dramatic, harsh, brown planting, representing a seizure. The planting beyond is more vivid with bright yellows and oranges, blue aquilegia and white peonies, associated with the possible heightening of the senses post seizure.

National Epilepsy Week was 14–20 May. Epilepsy Societyand Young Epilepsy are supporting the garden.

2.2:British Council Garden -

India A Billion Dreams

Designed by Sarah Eberle

Built by Belderbos Landscapes

Sponsored by British Council

Sarah Eberle’s design is sparked by the hopes and dreams of young people in India, and also draws on the UK and India’s shared love of cricket. It celebrates the 70th anniversary of the British Council in India.

The planting includes Meconopsis (Himalayan blue poppies), found in 1922 by a British expedition, led by legendary mountaineer George Leigh Mallroy; Vanda coerulea (blue orchids), which were first collected in the Khasi Hills of India in the modern state of Meghalaya by Thomas Lobb between 1848 and 1853; and roses. Rose motifs often feature in Mughal architecture across Northern India, including at the Taj Mahal. The garden features pietra dura marble designed by traditional craft-workers in Jaipur.

The garden has been commissioned by the British Council in partnership with the Piramal Group and is supported by the JSW Group, TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), Dr Pheroza J Godrej, Stanrose Mafatlal Group, Dr Gita Piramal and Leena Gandhi Tewari.

2.3:O-mo-te-na-shi no NIWA

Designed by Kazuyuki Ishihara

Built by Ishihara Kazuyuki Design Laboratory Co. Ltd

Sponsored by G-Lion

This traditional garden is inspired by the treasured Japanese culture of ‘omotenashi’, the concept of wholehearted and sincere hospitality, and the wish to invoke this feeling in guests to the garden. The planting is based on Ikenobo, a type of Japanese flower arranging dating from the 15th century, with the placement of plants and distribution of colour carefully considered in relation to the space.

The key feature of the garden is an octagonal Azumaya, or garden house, which is covered by roof material made of copper. There’s also a central pond surrounded by Japanese maples. The natural sound of water falling onto rock encourages the forgetting of time and the feeling of eternity.

2.5:Laced With Hope Garden

Designed by

Laura Anstiss

Built by

Frosts Landscape Construction

Sponsored by

Frosts Garden Centres

Laced with Hope tells the story of a child’s journey following a diagnosis of cancer, and the work the charity Supershoes does to empower that child in their fight. The use of art to frame the garden represents the way the charity uses art on shoes to inspire sick children. Sculptures represent children and their families. The lace sculpture extends up, over and through the plants, binding all elements together, and the bench provides a place for friends and support staff to sit and reflect.

The colour gold represents childhood cancer and is used in the lace sculpture, while other bright colours and large flowers in the planting, including mixed perennials and roses, provide a psychological boost in stressful times. The inlaid paving is inscribed with words defining a new language for families fighting cancer, and reflecting the mixture of emotions and challenges with the unfamiliar and frightening.

2.6:The Viking Cruises Wellness Garden

Designed by

Paul Hervey-Brookes

Built by

GK Wilson Landscapes

Sponsored by

Viking Cruises

The Viking Cruises Wellness Garden is a space inspired by the spa and the idea of living well, both of which are intrinsic to the Nordic way of life. The garden is imagined to belong to a single person or couple, and is a place in which to relax, feel at home with nature, unwind and recharge from the stresses of life. It is rich with traditional Nordic herbal and culinary plants, many of which are resurgent in Norway and Sweden.

The sauna and plunge pool form the core of the garden, with rugged natural slate and smooth timbers offering a juxtaposition of form and sensation. These, and the use of floating decks, offer clever and realistic solutions for small gardens where space is limited.

2.7:The Warner Edwards Garden

Designed by

Kate Savill and Tamara Bridge

Built by

Frogheath Landscapes

Sponsored by

Warner Edwards

The garden is inspired by Falls Farm, Northamptonshire, where every bottle of Warner Edwards Gin is distilled. The farm is situated on the remains of medieval terraced gardens, now a beautiful stepped grass landscape, which is represented discretely in the Warner Edwards Garden’s topography.

The choice of planting reflects the natural ingredients used in the creation of Warner Edwards gins, many of which are grown in the distillery’s botanical gardens and farm hedgerows. The water feature represents the farm’s own natural spring, the water from which is used for distillation. The use of natural materials, including Northamptonshire stone, mimics the farm’s own stone walls, and copper represents the distilling equipment, creating an authentic feel.

Bee-friendly plants reflect the farm’s apiary, and thyme and lemon balm, which are highly aromatic, can be used in garnishing gin and tonic.
