I don't want to be someone that you're settling for. I don't want to be

someone that anyone settles for.

我不想你将就, 我也不想成为将就的对象。

 

 

这是电影 Sleepless in Seattle （西雅图夜未眠）中的一句著名台词。你知道句中

settle for 的意思吗？

 

settle for something  “将就”、“勉强接受”“妥协接受”（to accept or agree 

to something, or to decide to have something, although it is not exactly what
​
you want or it is not the best）

 

1）Right, I am in my late 20s, but I will never settle for someone I don’t like.

没错，我是快三十了，但我决不会将就找个我不喜欢的人。

2）I don't want to settle for anything but the best.

我只要最好的，不想将就。

3）I had dreams of being an author, but I settled for a job editing other people's 

manuscripts. 

我曾梦想成为一名作家，但最终将就选定了一份编辑他人手稿的工作。

4）We had our eye on a gorgeous four-bedroom house, but it was too much money,

 so we had to settle for something smaller.

我们看中了一幢漂亮的四居室房子，但那房子太贵了，所以我们只好将就一些更小

5）It's best to wait for the one you want than settle for the one available.
