ANCIENT BYZANTINE RICHLY DECORATED OIL LAMP LANTERN

 

A veryattractive ancient Byzantine richly decorated oil lamp lantern with a loopedhandle, large body with a square opening for inserting the oil lamp, shapedholes and decorated windows all around the body. The way the lanterns wereemployed was probably as a holder for the lamps. However, other means oflighting could have been used. The lantern could also have been used with coalsor other means of making light

 

 

Byzantineperiod, 500 -600 AD

 

Measurements:Height: 24 cm - Diameter: 15 cm

 

 

Condition: Minorrepair on an ancient hairline crakc hard to see otherwise in an excallentcondition

 

 

Found nearBethlehem around 4 miles south of Jerusalem, Israel
