We need more badass names why does so many of the biggest companies have innocent and lame names? Apple Amazon Google and Facebook eg.
Imagine if Google was named Artificial Intelligence Assembling Data Corp and Amazon was called Heavy Logistic Industries Corp.

Not tying to defend the horrible accident in WenZhou but in terms of death rate per captia China has a pretty low number.
It really isn’t uncommon to see HSR incidents. And every country’s safety record becomes bad if you compare it to Shinkansen

Short answer it depends. Some of the infrastructure is very sturdy and standardised as it’s done by huge state owned companies with few incentives to cut corners other stuff just randomly collapses after a short time.
But regardless upkeep costs are going to be massive in the coming years.

Which as so much of the economy is reliant on construction is ultimately good for the economy as a whole. It will delay the massive collapse that’s coming after China runs out of things to build and gullible Chinese people to buy them. The housing bubble here is literally insane and when it pops China will be fucked for decades.

Curious why do you feel that a state-owned construction company would have few incentives to cut corners?

The collapse building are mainly build by private real-estate company for one and only purpose - milk out as much profit as possible during the economic bubble. The workers from this type of business are coming from low-income farmer family in rural China. These farmer workers are not professionally employed because the real-estate company rather outsource their workforce by using small local construction squads to reduce cost.

那些倒塌的建筑主要是由私人房地产公司建造的,唯一的目的是在经济泡沫期间尽可能多地赚取利润。这类企业的工人来自中国农村的低收入家庭。这些农民工没有得到专业的雇佣,因为房地产公司通过使用当地的小型施工队伍来降低劳动力成本。

On the other hand the workers from state-owned company are different. First the state-owned company never use local construction team and they bring their employees from headquarters. Second the workers are lifelong-employed like those people in Japanese company so the work force has accumulated experience every time they finish one infrastructure project. Third the budget from the government is massive and the raw materials price is dirt cheap and every infrastructure project is planned ahead at least 5-10 years so there isn’t much of an incentive to cut corners because you can’t make any more bucks by reducing cost anyway.

Because many if not all of these national infrastructure projects aren’t put out for tenders designated soe construct these on a vast scale with better standards than private or local developers.
More oversight no leverage for procurement lots of reasons I guess

I’d be pretty skeptical of all that. In any county there is a big incentive to cut corners in construction - saving time. You’re always looking for some way to save time because you know you’ll need that extra time somewhere down the line.
Also I don’t buy that there isn’t massive embezzlement going on in state-owned construction firms. Is construction the ONLY industry in China without corruption? Seems unlikely.

There is all that of course but the larger scale and more standardised construction have relatively fewer the opportunities to cut corners in ways that are dangerous. A lot more residential housing will collapse than bridges.

According to a recent BBC article the structures intended for railways are built much stronger than needed. The machines China uses to lay the top parts are much heavier than the expected load.

However like everything it is only as strong as its weakest lix. Quality control is something Chinese have not mastered in and is always a issue. Sure 95 percent of the construction is probably top notch but there is that 5 percent.

That's actually a myth. See this Forbes article on China's high-speed rail safety.
[Much cheaper than air travel HSR is faster and safer than conventional road and rail transportation. Though China cannot match Japan's nearly spotless HSR safety record it compares favorably with those of France Germany and Spain all of which have experienced fatal accidents. Given that China's network is bigger than those of all other countries combined its record is all the better by comparison.]

I think most/pretty much all of those deaths are from the slow trains. HSR accidents are actually pretty damn rare here. China seems to be pretty damn strict with its HSR lines since the 2011 Wenzhou accident especially when you consider how many more lines have opened since 2011.

Well there was a fatal accident with the Chinese high speed rail right off the bat. I believe Japan still hasn't had one and they've been in service since the 1960's. So even with China's big population it still doesn't have a great high speed rail record.

Yes China had an accident when their high-speed rail was just getting started but what is your basis for saying 'China still has a terrible track record in high speed rail safety'? France had at least one and Germany had at least one. If having one means 'terrible' then everyone except Japan is 'terrible'.
Can you find some numbers to back up your claim that China's high-speed rail is 'terrible'?

Based on my experience I agree with /u/reality_czech I had a meh-quality apartment in Beijing but the transportation system is top notch. Modern buses subways high-speed train. This is probably the thing China does best connect people.
