Is Black Friday a Public Holiday?

Black Friday is an informal name for the day after Thanksgiving Day in the United States.

黑色星期五是美国感恩节后一天的非正式名称。



It is a public holiday in more than 20 states, and is considered the start of the US Christmas shopping season.

它是美国20多个州的公共假日,被认为是美国圣诞购物季的开始。


Shopping for Christmas presents is popular on Black Friday.

Many stores have special offers and lower their prices on some goods, such as toys.

Why Is It Called Black Friday?


There are two popular theories as to why the day after Thanksgiving Day is called Black Friday. 

关于感恩节后的一天为什么被称为黑色星期五,有两种流行的说法。



One theory is that the wheels of vehicles in heavy traffic on the day after Thanksgiving Day left many black markings on the road surface, leading to the term Black Friday.

有一种理论认为,在感恩节后的第二天,交通繁忙的车辆的车轮在路面上留下了许多黑色标记,这就产生了“黑色星期五”这个词。


The other theory is that the term Black Friday comes from an old way of recording business accounts. Losses were recorded in red ink and profits in black ink. 

另一种理论认为,“黑色星期五”一词来源于一种古老的商业记账方式。亏损用红墨水记录,利润用黑墨水记录。



Many businesses,particularly small businesses,started making profits before Christmas.

Many hoped to start showing a profit, marked in black ink, on the day after Thanksgiving Day.
