In today's Zheng Xinmin Wechat program, we're going to talk about disphthongs. English is usually described as having eight diphthongs, and they can be usefully grouped in the following ways--centering diphthongs and closing diphthongs.
Centering diphthongs end with a glide towards /ə/. They are called 'centering’ because /ə/ is a central vowel. Closing diphthongs end with a glide towards /i/ or towards /u/. The glide is towards a higher position in the mouth. I’m going to show you how to pronounce these diphthongs correctly. I’m going tostart with centering diphthongs. The glide begins in the position for /i/, moving down and back towards /ə/.
